You weren't from the Uchiha's clan but you spent almost all your youth within them, more especially with a certain person : Itachi Uchiha. You hated him at the beginning, he was good looking and the best in everything he did and you were jealous of him since everything you tried failed miserably. You started to spy on him, hoping that you'll find techniques to beat him, but it never worked and he found out pretty easily that you were watching him. Itachi has never been the kind of guy who's close to people so you felt really special when he agreed to spend time with you to help you train and that's how you became friend with this little prodigy.

After the massacre of his clan, he tried to brainwash you like he did to his little brother but you weren't as naive as Sasuke and knew there was something more to it. After arguing for days, he finally decided that he could trust you and revealed all that had happened.

You were mad at him, against Konoha, against the leaders and the Uchihas. Why did he have to give up is life for them ? Why couldn't they have found another way ? You really wanted to kill them but you knew that everything Itachi had done would have been for nothing.So, you clenched your fists and teeth and bore with it...

Since then, you started to meet him in secret from time to time and you would talk about his little brother : how Sasuke is doing, how good looking and smart he is... During those times his face would soften into a gentle smile.

A few years later....

You haven't seen Itachi for a while now. Everything was chaotic, Sasuke had already left the village to join Orochimaru hoping to gain strength and kill his brother.
You waited under the usual tree, remembering the last time you saw him, when you accidentally blurted out that you loved him and he only responded with a sad smile while poking your forehead.

- Hey there ! You greeted before you could even see him.
- You noticed my presence ? You became good, ____. He stated

He sat next to you, and you both looked at the landscape. You were used to those silent conversations with Itachi, you knew that he came here to find peace and rest a little and you didn't mind, but this time there was some kind of tension in the air.

- You know..., he paused trying to find the right words, that probably the last time that we will see each other.
- W-what do you mean ? You asked trying to stay composed.
- My time is up, in a few weeks, probably less, I have to fight Sasuke...

This sentence was short but you knew all the meaning behind it : Fighting Sasuke meant his death, something that you didn't want at all, you felt your eyes becoming teary and you tried to prevent them from crying.

- So...Y-you're really going to do it ? There's not a chance that you will change your mind, right ? You asked trying to control your hoarse voice.
- I already accepted my faith a long time ago, you should do the same you know ____, you shouldn't worry about my life, you have yours to live. He said while patting your head.
- You've always been like this Itachi...Not worrying about you, always thinking about the other...The only time you allowed yourself to be selfish it was when you decided to let your brother live...You should probably think about you for once, before you... You said as your voice trailed off.
- That something I can't do right now...
- Why not ?!

The ninja sighed.

- If I start to do what I want, everything I have done until now wouldn't have any meaning...My destiny is already written I can't go against it, especially right now. I don't want to start living while I know that I can't.

You stayed silent not caring about your tears anymore. Why was it him ? Why did you fall in love with someone who had a countdown above his head ? Itachi took you into an embrace, your face resting against his chest while his hands were gently stroking your back.

-W-Why is it you who is comforting me while you're the one who's going to disappear ? You said nervously chuckling at the strange situation.
- Because I have always been stronger than you.
- Itachi...I love you. You confessed for the second time.

His hands stopped moving for a second and he tightened his embrace as he whispered a single : “I know, thank you.”. You smiled and stayed with him until dusk savoring every little second and remembering each little details about him.

...

You were now both on your feet facing each other. None of you wanted to say goodbye.

- Take care of yourself, ____. He said gently patting your head as usual.
- I will.

You were crying again. You wanted to smile for the last time but you just couldn't pretend that everything was ok. Itachi suddenly moved his hand toward your cheek, and cupped your face in his hands, his eyes on yours.

- W-what are you doing ? You asked confused as a light blush covered your cheeks.
- I am sorry, I am selfish after all... He said before kissing you.

Your first and last kiss was a salty bitter-sweet kiss, a kiss to express all the love you both had. He finally let go of you and poked your forehead, smiling, before vanishing.

A few days later the heartbreaking news you feared most came:

Sasuke won.
