Description Those stuck between niches can't survive- this is true both in the natural and mental world. Compromise worsens both sides. You cannot share your spirit without detracting from either goal. You cannot live on a border. You cannot split your heart. You must choose. To soar- you must be wholehearted.

Because pterosaur-girls can't fly.

alternatively: being human- sentient, deathaware- can be a liability to an organism.

----
*Generic* inconsistent innacurate pterosaurs- didn't really care as it's a surreal piece (so hush).
Funky water, I forgot about the splash as I went along so it's half-assed snuck in there, some unwanted haloing inthe water, but besides that I'm very pleased, especially with the chunkyness of the seaserpent who kinda stole the spotlight-MMM. Wish I could more *exact* with flippin charcoal though, blech. Photo lost details as well.

I was honestly sitting and staring at this paper for well over an hour a few weeks ago after I set it up as the intimidating blank paper left me without an idea, so I'm very glad it didn't turn out crappy o.o .

18"24" charcoal on paper. Mild toning in Photoshop editing.

This is done on charcoal and newsprint, I think. It's really large IRL.

This is a beautiful piece, but I can't help but be disturbed by the implications. What ever happened to the philosophy of balance in all things?

Heck, even in evolution organisms that over-specialize (i.e. put all of their genetic eggs into one basket) go extinct when the environment changes.

CBSorgeArtworks In reply to Coelophysis [2005-07-17 18:54:08 +0000 UTC]

A bit off-topic, actually. I was thinking not so much "against balance" as in moderation, as "against contrasting goals" i.e., complete dedication undiluted by other wishes. It's a concern I've taken straight from experience and has become a problem, so that's why it's appeared. Balance is a different phenomenon.

Like with the hybrid example, a creature born to parents of two different niches will not be as successful as full-blooded individuals in either one because it cannot be completely dedicated due to it having traits belonging to surviving in the other niche. Simplified from reality, sure, but it's just an analogy. I hope that makes some kind of sense.

There is so much detail in this piece. I love how much emotion you managed to string into it, and the style of shading is lovely^^ I like the water, myself.

What I like most about this is not only is the drawing beautifully composed, but what you said about it.

You cannot live on a border. You cannot split your heart. You must choose. To soar- you must be wholehearted.

These words redefine the drawing.

And that pterosaur on the far left (the big one) has a look of "Look at that!" on his face.

The fuckdamn pterosaurs are too happy-go-lucky (one is like, smiling), but it does emphasise the goodness of the sky- more sadness from falling from it.

Eviction.

Hm... To fly...

"We used to know how the birds flew, Tom, but we just don't anymore. That's something you'll have to learn for yourself. But remember to ask why they fly, too. Why do you want to fly?"

CBSorgeArtworks In reply to Iphian [2005-04-06 06:23:21 +0000 UTC]

Wonderful.

I had a dream that I flew once, and I stole a friend's wings (or a bad mockery thererof) and flew above my old house until I remembered I was afraid of heights. HA

Back in the glory days of clinical depression, I had dreams of trying to fly, but failing.

Now I dream of ordinary, boring things or extraordinary, obscure things.

CBSorgeArtworks In reply to Iphian [2005-04-06 06:53:20 +0000 UTC]

Ordinary, boring dreams are good, only in the sense that there's no mental conflict needing resolution in your head, even though the fun dreams are the ones that seek to solve a problem.

My bad.
