Not usually. I do a lot of editing with layer effects and overlays.

the reason i wondered this time, is I wondered if the gradiant background is seperate on its own layer comapred to the black and white base form of scraggy (assuming you work in B&W for the base shape and putting colour on later)

You are correct! I normally start sketches on a beige or other neutral-ish warm hue and sketch with a dark value of that hue, then ad highlights, then usually a seperate layer for the color, and gradient overlays for interest and focus.
