you blur the layer above the background layer, which is the layer you should be coloring on.
Never blur the original color layer.

If you don't mind me asking, what are the details of the source inks?
Are they hand drawn and then scanned at a particular resolution or are they converted to paths?

y'know what I like most about your coloring, you enhance the lines not alter them... some coloring I've seen you can tell that some liberties were taken with this lines... you just make the lines shine, great stuff.

This is going to sound douchebaggy, but most of the times I just kinda know. I'll stare at it for a while and just kinda see it a certain way and then do it. It doesn't always end up exactly like I want it to, but hey, I do what I can.
Other times I just go for it blindly and see what happens. ...not always a good thing. XD
This one I knew exactly what to do cause I'd started another piece with another artist that was kind of along these lines with the wood background and transparent thin paint feel of the sunflowers. I knew I wanted to do that with this piece cause I knew that the sunflowers were insanely busy and that if I didn't tame them down they'd most likely look too busy and distract from the central figures.

Right, I guess thats the best approach. I usually study it a bit first and start with what I feel I have figured out. Sometimes though, when I finish the rest of it, I come back to where I started and do some things over again. Seems like my juices really flow towards the end...
