Description
'Show Desktop' is a small portable application, inspired by Windows 7 Aero Peek, that creates a small rectangular button at the right side of the user's taskbar that not only replaces the original Windows 7 Show Desktop Button, but also adds tons of features. For those using Windows Operating Systems, 'Show Desktop' is fully compatible with Windows XP and Vista, and provides all of the features that can be found on the Windows 7 Show Desktop Button, and more.

'Show Desktop' is greatly customizable, in that it allows the user to change the application's settings to their liking.

'Show Desktop' also gives the access to Shutdown options directly from the Show Desktop Button. These options allow the user to easily switch users, log off, lock, sleep, shutdown, restart, and hibernate their computer straight from a menu accessible from the button itself.

Features
• Show Desktop Button addition for Windows XP, and Vista; Show Desktop Button replacement for Windows 7
• 'Aero Peek' support for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 with customization.
• A redesigned and easy to use Exclusion Manager to exclude certain programs from being peeked through
• Shutdown Options
• 'Toggling the Desktop' and 'Minimize Windows' features that allow the user to choose the method in which open windows are minimized.
• Ability to change the delay before when 'Aero Peek' is invoked
• Support and automatically adjusting feature for different taskbar sizes and positions
• (NEW) Drag and Drop feature where all windows are minimized when a file is dragged onto the Show Desktop Button
• (NEW) Option to have the application run on Windows Startup

and more...

Show Desktop XP is exclusive to Aero Xtreme 7 XP . You may NOT package it with a theme or any other work without my or IanITAInc 's permission. However, if you want to feature 'Show Desktop', you can simply simply post a link to this page.

eeeeeek, not good. you think it could be just my machine setup? every one's a bit different tho, Im really thinking it has to do with the .NET programming or whatever else may be involved with the .NET contained within your program. still I hope you the best in figuring out the problem and fixing it, though I still think you shouldnt worry, it seems very rare and no matter what we're still gonna use it!

It must be. No one else has contacted me with a similar problem and after scouring the code, I just can't find something that would cause it. So weird

by the way I meant to ask.. could it be a .NETframework Error or .Net Coding Error given the Windows Title? I dont know much about the whole coding thing but that was what I was thinking..

Interesting update. IT doesn't look like Windows 7 Aero peak anymore , but it still gets the job done. I also tested this in windows 8 RP and it works

Yes, I decided to do away from the original Windows 7 images and give it its own look. And thanks

link6155 In reply to CeIIular [2012-07-29 23:12:06 +0000 UTC]

I feel that the new look is a little too clear. Making the windows peek a little less transparent would look better in my opinion. I think the new look is alright, but maybe a customization option for the reflection would be nice

Awesome!

Is there source available anywhere? I'd like to contribute. If not, are you taking suggestions? The only feature missing is the minimizing that happens when dragging text/files/bookmarks over the button. I wouldn't mind implementing.

CeIIular In reply to joeyespo [2012-07-01 17:28:36 +0000 UTC]

No, I haven't released the code. But I'm actually working on it right now. But I'm a little confused. You're saying it should minimize when you drag files(or pretty much anything) over the button?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

joeyespo In reply to CeIIular [2012-07-04 15:20:48 +0000 UTC]

Yes, allowing you to drop that file/anything onto the desktop.

Similar to dragging a file or text over the taskbar in XP. Windows 7 moved this functionality to its "show desktop" button though, instead of allowing you to drag anywhere on the taskbar like XP.

Glad to hear you're still working on it!

I love using this!! It's very useful to use in Windows XP and Windows Vista

Oh.. and... I'd like it if you could switch the look of the Show Desktop button?
Just a request.. cause I love messing around with images.
If possible of course.

If not... then that's fine since it is amazing the way it is already.

Yes, one other person pointed that out some time ago. I will try to fix it in the next update. In the mean time though, if you want, you can change your Display Text Size to 100%, which should fix this.
Thanks

thx a lot!

how do I do that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CeIIular In reply to ThatKooKooGuy [2012-04-18 21:05:59 +0000 UTC]

Go to the control panel and search "Text Size". An option saying "Make text and other items larger of smaller" will appear. Choose that option, and in the new window that pops up, select the option that says "Smaller - 100% (Default)". Then click Apply and reboot for the change to take place.
Hope this helps

Hi, AWESOME program, thank you so much!

I have a request/suggestion:

For the "minimize windows" method, would it be possible for the program to toggle between calling these 2 .vbs scripts, each time the showdesktop button is pressed?

minimize:
Set shell = wscript.CreateObject("Shell.Application")
Shell.MinimizeAll

restore:
Set shell = wscript.CreateObject("Shell.Application")
Shell.UndoMinimizeAll

I have these vbs scripts showing as 2 quick launch icons on my taskbar, and allow me to minimize all windows, open a new program, then restore all windows. If your application were to simply toggle between calling these 2 scripts, so it would minimize on one click, allow me to open a new program, then restore all windows on next click, it would be a dream come true

thanks again anyway for your time!

P

CeIIular In reply to woofatorg [2012-04-17 16:36:19 +0000 UTC]

Yes it would be possible, and I had thought of something very similar when creating the "minimize windows" option. But the problem with that is that when the Show Desktop Button is clicked, it would be impossible to know whether the user intended to run the MinimizeAll or UndoMinimizeAll code. I realized that simply having making it minimize on one click and restore on the next won't work well in a lot of situations, as it usually causes the unintended action to take place, which happened numerous times while we were testing it.
And thank you, I'm glad that you like Show Desktop and find it useful. I'm sorry that I'm not able to help you out with this though.

woofatorg In reply to CeIIular [2012-04-18 21:15:55 +0000 UTC]

how about middle click to restore (instead of opening settings)? or an option for middle click to work as restore, in the case the minimize windows method is chosen?

thanks

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CeIIular In reply to woofatorg [2012-04-23 03:10:13 +0000 UTC]

I had also considered different commands to perform each action and decided against it long ago. Sorry

woofatorg In reply to woofatorg [2012-04-16 22:58:43 +0000 UTC]

Hi, I should clarify that the "toggle desktop" should cover this request (minimize, open new program, restore all), but usually if I open a program after toggling desktop, clicking the toggle desktop button again will simply minimize the new program that I opened. Somehow this doesn't apply to Google Chrome (if I click button to toggle desktop, open chrome, then click button again, all the windows will restore).

Anyway, these VBS scripts somehow allow me to always restore all windows, regardless of what program I open.

Regards,

p

I am currently using ViGlance (google it) to emulate the taskbar and start buttons, however, whilst having the Fade option on, when i hide all programs, the software thinks the taskbar icons are also a program and it hides them. And when it brings them back, ViGlance goes all buggy! Is there any way I can add ViGlance.exe to some kind of exclusion list for this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CeIIular In reply to JonnyPC12 [2012-02-26 18:26:02 +0000 UTC]

Yes a few other people had this problem. You need to add the Viglance to the exclusion list, which you can access from the settings window. The classname for Viglance is "Running Applications" or something similar. Hope this helps
