THE HEARING

"We are here because of the murder of Logain." Wesley's voice carried throughout the hall. It reminded me of Anajol, a trial in a tattered building.
   "Eyna admits to her crime. She has told us how she stabbed Logain with the same knife used to kill Deena. Is that right, Eyna?"
   "Yes. I sneaked into the evidence locker and stole the knife. Then I found Logain in Weyla's room. He did not expect me to hurt him, he was relaxed. So I killed him."
    "Then there is not much to it. Eyna, we sentence you to exile. You are no longer welcome among the Broken Fangs. You will leave immediately and never come back."
   Eyna nodded. I thought she looked sad, which I didn't understand. She had committed a gruesome crime and this was a mild punishment. Too mild.
    "I object!" I called out. "She said it herself - an eye for an eye! She should be killed! I'll do it myself!"
Wesley shook his head. "We do not believe in the death penalty here in the Fangs, Weyla. What Eyna did was wrong, yes, but the only suitable punishment for a human is exile."
   "No! She should die!"
   "Calm down. You will see it through, in time. Roy, please take Eyna away."
   Roy grabbed Eyna by the arm. She looked back at me. "I'm sorry that it came to this, Weyla. I wish things would have turned out differently, and that we still would have been friends." I said nothing. I just glared at her. She was lucky I didn't jump forward and slit her throat.
   Together Eyna and Roy walked out of the house and left our premises. I never saw her after that.
