Description
That day that started everything began much as these days do. The brilliant morning sun rose, her sister moon gently lowered until that evening. A gentle breeze wafted through a vast, lush orchard, bringing along with it a fragrant, sweet and distinct scent. A few small songbirds flittered and twittered merrily from above. There was a lone figure they observed, trotting along the well-worn dirt road. The orange mare, however, didn't quite feel the peacefulness of the world around her. Even though she tried to distract herself by focusing her thoughts on the lovely, cool breeze and warm rays beating down upon her back. However, her mind continued to wander elsewhere.
Her hooves crunched softly against the rocks and soil, the large cart she pulled behind her trundling creakily along. Her signature, delicious apples sat piled high inside, gleaming in the morning son and bringing with them that mouth-watering, ever-tantalizing smell. Applejack had gathered together a few bushels of her best fruit and was now heading from her beloved Sweet Apple Acres into Ponyville Marketplace. She hoped the village's citizens were hankerin' for some delicious apples for breakfast so she'd be able to bring a few extra bits home. Perhaps that would help lift her family's spirits.
The past few weeks had been tremulous, and that morning was no different. During a rather large harvest, Big Mac had taken to overworking himself to raise as much money as he could. He'd popped the big question to his beloved marefriend Sugar Belle, and although she was rather insistent she didn't need one, Big Mac wanted to give her a grand, beautiful wedding. And thus, the enthusiastic, love-stricken stallion mistimed a buck, and smashed an ankle against one of their largest trees. Now, her brother was on strict bed rest to heal. Thankfully, it was a mere hairline fracture, but the doctors warned them if he exacerbated his injury at all, his apple-bucking days were over.
That meant Sugar Belle was reducing her hours in her bakery so she and Granny Smith could help care for the injured pony. Applebloom had taken to begging AJ to help with harvesting too. After all, she was almost nine and was still only allowed to hold buckets or pick up rotten cores. AJ tried to reassure her stubborn sister that what she was doing was invaluable to the farm, but a teary face and slammed door made it quite obvious Applebloom was unsatisfied with this answer.
Before she knew it, her ears picked up at the hustle and bustle as the inhabitants of Ponyville began to start their day. A few ponies lifted their hooves and waved to Applejack, the farm pony giving a halfhearted wave in return. Soon enough, she was let into the market and trotting to her usual spot. It wasn't very busy yet, a few early birds browsing the various booths. Applejack began to set up the baskets and signs. As she was arranging the setup she found herself sort of wishing Rarity was here to add just a little bit of flair. She might just have to ask her when she got back into town...
Suddenly, her ear flicked backwards as she picked up on a familiar timbre voice. This time, however, there was another one accompanying it. Turning away from her cart, AJ glanced across the way towards the firewood booth, where lumber pony Burnt Oak stood, adjusting a bundle of birch kindling upon his table. Beside him stood another gray stallion. This fellow, however, was slightly taller and wore a long, shaggy mane the color of bark. He appeared much younger than Burnt Oak, but his sharp facial features were quite similar to the other pony. With every small movement of his large, feathered hooves, the muscles beneath his stormy coat seemed to ripple. A few loose strands of hair fell towards his muzzle, and he gave a nonchalant blow from the corner of his mouth. Suddenly, he visibly frowned and turned his head away from the booth - and suddenly Applejack found herself starting into two rather intense blue eyes.
Blinking in surprise, AJ dropped her muzzle, feeling a rush of warmth invade her cheeks. She'd only been trying to remember where she'd seen this pony. the figment of a small, lanky colt coming to mind, when she started to notice those rather lovely muscles, and that dusty, messy mane. The stoic gray pony turned slightly and muttered something to the older stallion, whose moustache curled into a smile. He said something in return, then gestured towards the farm mare. Much to AJ's chagrin, she watched as the two began to make their way towards her cart, but she put on her most friendly, helpful smile.
"Well, howdy-do Burnt Oak! Its ah' beautiful day out, tha's for sure! How's everythin' goin' at the mill?" She chirped, hoping beyond hope nopony noticed the blush in her cheeks. Burnt Oak wore his usual gentle smile, but his companion remained stone-faced.
"Ah, all is goin' just fine. But it sure has been busy since Ash here got back into town," Oak replied cheerfully, lifting a hoof and patting the other stallion's shoulder. "You remember Ash Bark, though its been some time. This little colt is all grown up now." Oak chuckled affectionately, earning an eye roll and small smile from his son. Now that he was so close up, AJ noticed that Ash's muzzle and cheeks were sparsely speckled with pale cream freckles, much akin to her own. Another flush of embarrassment rushed through the mare, but she managed to stave it off.
"O-Oh, yeah! It's bin so long, ya know. Its nice ta see ya again! What've y'all bin up to all these years?" AJ inquired, fiddling slightly with the leftover stem of a golden delicious. At that point, the gray stallion smiled - a small one, but a grin nonetheless.
"Well, I haven't saved all of Equestria yet, but bounty huntin' is still fairly excitin'," Ash replied. His voice carried a similar air to this father's - deep and warm. "But I needed somethin' to occupy me for a couple a' years."
"You undersell yourself, son," Burnt Oak said, eyes shining with pride. "This boy has been responsible for catching some of Equestria's worst bandits, pirates, highwaymen - he was recruited by Sheriff Silverstar of Appleloosa himself." Ash, however, didn't share his father's enthusiasm.
"I wouldn't undersell myself if I hadn't let Knife Edge get away," he growled, expression darkening. Noticing AJ's furrowed brow of concern, he leaned forward slightly and lowered his voice. "Knife Edge is the one stallion that I've managed to let slip through my hooves. He's a ruthless bandit and doesn't discriminate when it comes to his victims. We caught the rest of his gang, and they've all sung like canaries, but..." Ash shook his head. "Trail has gone cold. The Sheriff heard a rumor he was going to target Ponyville, then head down to the San Palominos and disappear for good. Silverstar sent me down here to keep an eye on y'all's village. Already talked to Mayor Mare and the Princess, so...we'll see." He lowered his eyes, looking frustrated. AJ's ears dropped against her mane, taking in this new information. Her brother was injured, sister-in-law-to-be focused on caring for him, leaving her grandmother and baby sister rather vulnerable, all the way out there on the farm, on the outskirts of town...
"Hey, hey, now, don't you worry young lady. My son's been doin' this for years. I know our town is safe." Burnt Oak said gently, noticing her expression. "How is Macintosh, by the way?"
"Oh, healin' and hankerin' ta get back on his feet. Glad Sugah Belle moved in, keeps him from goin' crazy." AJ gave a light chuckle, while Burnt Oak frowned.
"That means you've been keeping the orchards tended to by yourself, then." He said, looking rather concerned for his best friend's middle foal. AJ kept her smile, though the corners dipped a little.
"Ah, keeps me busy. Big Mac won't be laid up for too terribly much longer." She replied, feeling like she could already climb into bed and knock right out. Burnt Oak quirked a brow and looked at his son. AJ turned away as Lyra and Bon Bon approached her booth. She heard the two stallions muttering back and forth as Lyra bought a pound of her very favorite pink pearl apples. As she turned around back towards the stallions, Burnt Oak pressed a hoof-full of golden bits into AJ's hoof.
"Ah, its 'bout time I get back to the booth. A pound of red delicious, if you wouldn't mind." Oak said, and Applejack happily bagged up his bushel and deposited the bits into her money box (hoping it wouldn't look so empty by the end of today). Oak gave a wave, then turned away to head back across the marketplace to sell his firewood. Ash Bark, however, did not follow his father. Instead, he stood beside Applejack's cart, looking down at the barrels still overflowing with fruit.
"Can ah get'cha a bushel too? Or maybe granny smith's more yer taste - the apple, not mah granny!" AJ chuckled, and surprisingly, Ash joined in.
"I'll have to pass. I'd, uh, reckon I'm going to be eating quite a few apples for awhile." Ash said with a roll of his shoulders. The mare quirked a curious brow, prompting the stallion to take a deep breath and continue. "I think it would be in both our best interests if you'll allow me to hole up at your farm for awhile. I'll help ya with your harvest while your brother gets better, and you'll let me keep an eye on the area. It'd be a lot easier then if I was at the lumber mill or my dad's cabin. Being at the motel won't help much either, Knife Edge is too smart to attack the center of town."
Applejack blinked, slightly taken aback. "Uh, tha' is mighty fine of ya, Mr. Bark, but ah got a lot to keep an eye on maself. Ah don't have a guest room ready, and 'sides, mah trees were cul-tah-vated over almost a hundred years, and there're real certain ways yah gotta buck 'em to keep from hurtin' yerself or tha' tree. Ah don't have time ta take care of yah if yah break yer ankle too-"
"Yeah, okay, Jack. My dad is a lumber pony. My ma was the best arborist Ponyville ever saw. I know my way around a tree. Y'all won't even really know I'm there. I'm gonna have to keep an eye out for Knife Edge. Pa doesn't need my help at the mill, and you need help at your farm. Plus, if Edge does show up, he won't be able to lay a hoof on your family or friends. Deal?" Ash concluded gruffly, holding up one feathered hoof. He fixed her with his stoic, intimidating stare, and all fell silent for a few moments.
Really and truly never realizing until much later how this decision would carve the path for the rest of her life, AJ took a deep breath. Remembering the wisdom of Twilight Sparkle, and that lesson she taught her all those years ago, AJ met his stony stare with her own, lifting a hoof and touching his own.
"Deal."

And, here. We. Go.
Here we finally have it - the first chapter to the forever-promised Apples to Ashes, companion piece of A Rare Kind of Happy . I've been working this little plot bunny in the back of my mind for awhile and been teasing this thing forever. Ash was featured wayyyyy back here.
ech. But life does get in the way, and sometimes your creativity takes some unexpected turns. But I've finally gathered the inspiration to want to turn back to muh handsome fellas and make some canon characters fall in love with them and it will be so sappy and gooey and...well, y'all are familiar with my work. So of course in developing my own NextGen AU, you gotta find a nice fella for your second-favorite pony (that's right haters fight me)
But I fought to. I really didn't like any of the...options presented. I do really enjoy her ships in the fandom with Trouble Shoes and occasionally a good Rarijack piece will get my shippers' heart beating. So when I was looking to Rarity's love story and creating Fancy Pants, I decided an OC might just be able to fit our favorite farm girl too. Thus, Ash was born. Originally, he was going to the be son of Silverstar and a much more serious and dark rogue bounty hunter, but then "The Perfect Pear" aired (yeah, I've been working on him that long) and I adored Burnt Oak's character. So...he just ended up fitting in.
and nudged his way into the last little story on the dump there and solidified himself as canon in the Athenaverse. To be honest I've had the most fun with his story, and I really hope that you guys are going to enjoy it too.
By the by, a gigantic shoutout to this girl helped me with this particular story like you wouldn't even believe. I can't tell you guys really what yet without spoilers but I owe a huge thanks to her. You're the absolute best Pastel. <3

You smell that?
That’s the smell of a freshly baked ship and boi if this slice doesn’t taste sweeter than American apple pie I don’t know what does.
Have I mentioned how much I really dig Ash’s color scheme and overall design. I’m not big into the cowboy type but boi if this ruggedly handsome man of the law doesn’t make my heart flutter with his flaming sideburns and kuvu-esque scar and blue eyes and where was I going with this? Ah yes, the picture. It’s so satisfying to see it finally colored like I feel like I could die happy after seeing this now. And see your knowing smirk Burnt don’t think I didn’t catch that you old rascal.
As for the story whoooooo boi, there are just so much to unpack here! First off, I looove how these two knew each other as kiddoes. It not only makes him feel more like a solid character to know there’s some faint history between them, but I’m just eating up the idea of a lanky, serious, “I’m gonna wrestle bad guys when I grow up just you wait and see” Ash hanging out with an equally scrawny AJ. *add that to list of things to draw* I also like how you had AJ working the booth, showing how she has more jobs than just Apple bucking to worry about how and as a result showing the utter weight that must now be on her shoulders. Very clever angle. 👌
As for the scene as a whole, it read really smoothly for me. The exposition at the beginning was as interesting to read as it was evenly paced, and I do love when people lace a narration with fun wording like you did. AJ’s reaction and character also seemed on point, and I think you balanced her sudden ‘oh no you’re hot feelings’ with the stress she feels. I couldn’t see it, but I could easily tell by the tense gestures that slipped through her casual demeanor that she was trying to keep stress of everything bottled up inside. Typical AJ.
Although I got to admit, Ash’s rather . . . straight forward business proposal at the end felt a little uncomfortably passive aggressive, and I was kinda taken a back a bit at first. But then I figured that, if this is who Ash is- a forceful, headstrong stallion who gets straight to the point- then his forceful attitude definitely works with his character. Not very charismatic, but at the same time, the intimating aspect of it has a certain attraction to it. And I’m sure the more I learn about this ripped stallion the more I’ll come to appreciate his ungrateful conversation tatcis.
And you know, thinking about Ash compared to Happy, I’ve realized that they are both rather opposites of each other. Happy is p Swauve and grace and gentlemanly and probably could swoon ten mares with one twitch of his mustache. Meanwhile, Ash comes off as a hardened, stoic badboi with ‘past’ but who also has a heart of gold underneath his crusty exterior and it’s as intimidating as it is intriguing.
gosh i love them both so much and im so thirsty for moooooooore
Also this turned out to be more of a rant than anything but hey hopefully you enjoy it almost as much as I enjoyed reading this lovely little fanfic opener
(and would you lookie there we aren’t even to the part I helped with and yer still given me credit you little stinker you.)

its delicious, straight from the brain oven come and get'cha brainchild pie here
Ah and growing up in the near heart of the old West, we've got a lot of that culture (cowboy/mountain ranger) in my state so I grew up around it and have quite an affinity for the old westerns/cowboy stories. And Ash went through quite a few color palettes before I settled on this one. He actually ended up a lot simpler than he originally was, but I'm actually quite pleased with how he ended up. And of course, Burnt saw the same thing go down with Bright Mac. He's a wise old pony, and he's had his share of romance (we'll explore Willow's character in a bit).
*also adds things to list of things to draw that is a million miles long * and yes, I really wanted to work on AJ's personality quirk in which she is so adamant and stubborn that she can take care of everything and everyone by herself. After all, she's gotta make those parents of hers proud and keep everything they worked so hard for alive and well. I wanted to develop that aspect against Ash's own stubbornness and allows AJ to reflect a little. I won't go into it further without spoilers :3
Ahhhh yeeeeeeeee I am so happy the written portion came out okay. I started this chapter three times and the final draft was satisfying enough to work with. *rubs hands together* huehuhehue and yiiiss, we're going to have fun with this emotional constipation of a stallion. Ash has been fairly isolated for a long time in focusing on his bounty hunting and so doesn't have a lot of, not only experience with mares, but social experience outside of trying to find answers and evidence. He can charm the room number of a theif out of a giggly saloon mare, but when it comes to a real mare like AJ? He's going to a passive aggressive dick.
And we're gonna get a good exploration on this fella and his less-than-stellar charisma.
