Description
It was Sugar Belle who provided the winning vote when Applejack approached her family that evening with Ash Bark's proposal. She gathered everypony in Big Mac's room and explained the situation at hoof. Of course there were objections, mainly from Granny Smith and Big Macintosh. Mac would be better in a mere couple of weeks, and they were a strong family that takes care of one another - by themselves. However, Sugar Belle quietly spoke up, and the newest member of their family conceded that, yes, they were strong, but if this Knife Edge was as dangerous as this Ash described, and had evaded Silverstar's bounty hunters, then there's nothing keeping him from coming to Ponyville - except, possibly, Ash. With that, AJ went and made one of the guest bedrooms inhabitable. Later that evening, after dropping a few bits into Applejack's hoof to "pay for room and board," Ash Bark slunk into the bedroom, closed the door, and did not speak another word to anypony. AJ was awake most that evening, wondering how the next few weeks would pan out.
And so they did. AJ woke that morning as she always did. She'd sold a good amount of produce yesterday, so it was time to buck her flourishing gala trees - they seemed to be the most popular apple yesterday. While scarfing down a quick breakfast before the others woke, she kept glancing at the kitchen threshold to see if the Apples' guest would rise with her, or the rest of the family. AJ had been thinking and worrying - perhaps she had let her guard down too early, and been a bit too vulnerable in front of his near-stranger, and having such a pony in her home around her baby sister, and her sweet-as-pie-not-very-tough-future-sister-in-law, and her injured brother and aging grandmother and...
Applejack then looked up. During her internal battle she'd set her hat on her head and walked out to the orchard just as dawn was beginning to break. A dark figure approached from the treeline. Ash Bark's soot gray coat hid him completely in the shadows of the orchard, and AJ didn't spot him until he moved. He trotted towards her, glancing to either side of him.
"Mornin'. I've done a perimeter sweep of the farm and haven't picked up any signs of intruders." Ash greeted her briskly, giving his shoulders a shake before approaching the nearest gala tree. Slightly taken aback, AJ gave a quick shake of the head and took over the tree next to Ash's. She watched carefully as he lifted both back hooves, tucked them in, glanced over his shoulder, and throw them back. The tree shook with a mighty groan, leaves rustling heavily. To Applejack's surprise, quite a few apples tumbled to the ground. Ash met her gaze and gave a slightly haughty grin. Suddenly feeling like a filly, AJ stuck her tongue out at his snobby smile. This caused them both to chuckle lightly before Applejack gave the stallion an appreciative nod and set to her own work.
Until noon, the two bucked the gala grove until their baskets were overflowing with fragrant pink fruit. Quite pleased that she'd been able to get ahead on her bucking, AJ began to head over to an empty field nearby, where her trusty old plow sat. Right before Mac had injured himself, they'd cleared away a portion of struggling golden delicious trees and wanted to replace them. Ash followed in curiosity, but stopped short when he saw the plow. Applejack slipped into the harness, grinning at his expression.
"Lil' differen' from trees, huh?" She quipped, and for the first time, she saw the bounty hunter look a little sheepish. Laughing, she lifted a hoof and gestured to the still-healthy golden delicious trees standing tall nearby.
"Mrs. Cake, a baker in town has ordered five pounds of goldens for a party she's helping cater. Ya can help me out and get it done sooner rather than later." AJ said, adjusting the strap around her barrel and digging her hooves into the dirt. She began to drag the large piece of equipment behind her. Each time she passed him, her heart gave an annoying little skip that she hoped was due to physical activity.
And with that, Applejack's worry over their new guest waned greatly. Ash showed his capability and strength with each chore AJ assigned him. True, it was mostly bucking trees, but the weight taken off her shoulders seemed immense. And then, he started to do little things around the house itself. Now that she had finished her apprenticeship with Chiffon Swirl, Sugar Belle was working to open her own small bakery on the farm that specializes in apple trees (with the Cakes' blessing as a new competitor, of course). This meant all was put on hold while she looked over the grumpy, immobile Big Mac. He didn't need much care, but being alone in his room feeling useless all the time made him quite miserable, which caused Sugar to try and spend more time with him.
Now, with another stallion in the home, Big Macintosh was even grumpier. He'd stood as "stallion of the home" for so long, it was quite obvious he felt a little jealousy towards his perceived usurper. That is, until AJ walked in on the two of them one evening after hearing hooping and hollering. Initially concerned, AJ couldn't help her relief when she saw that Ash and Mac were engaged in a harrowing game of Ogres and Oubliettes (turns out Ash had been building up his arrow mage or something for over five years. It gets boring on the job sometimes) and was discussing what appeared to be an intense piece of trivia. From then, Big Mac and Ash Bark never shared anything but their character's stats and various trivia (and as AJ learned later, reassurance from Ash that he'd be off the farm as soon as his job was done).
Everything, however, nearly came to a boil when Applejack thought she saw the gray stallion whack her dear old granny across the muzzle. Feeling like she was having a heart attack, the orange mare burst into the room about to beat the abuser to a pulp. Then she noticed he was actually holding her head between his hooves and was slowly tilting it back and forth before pressing the tips into the nape of her neck. A blissful Granny Smith asks AJ to join in the massage Ash was so kind to offer when he saw Granny's arthritis acting up this morning. Both of the younger ponies in the room quite quickly flashed a pleasant shade of pink, and the mare quickly hastened her way out of the room. It took quite awhile for her to calm down her raging nerves. There was still that shield, that small blanket of hesitation when it came to her new acquaintance. That is, however, until one moment changed all of that...
Applebloom had been sulky and pouty until Ash arrived (Applejack didn't even want to think about her swiftly upcoming teen years). Since then, she had taken no pause in eagerly telling her friends about their mysterious new guest, though didn't really approach him upfront. Applejack's friends quickly found out about Ash from the fillies, though they kept their concerns to themselves. After all, they trusted the self-sufficient farm mare.
The week or so Ash had been at the farm, he'd woken before dawn, done his perimeter sweep, completed his daily chores, then left on another patrol before heading to bed. It was a little interesting to AJ that one of the friendliest, most talkative fillies she'd ever known had been quite shy around Mr. Bark. So when Applejack saw them sitting together, a basket atop AB's head while Ash bucked down the apples for her to catch, it surprised the farm mare. Intrigued, and convincing herself that she was merely observing (because eavesdropping is dishonest) AJ watched the scene and realized the two were having a conversation.
"...you sure are springy, kid." Ash said, wiping his brow with a hoof. "I bet those springs really help your sister out, huh?" Applebloom set the bucket down and nodded.
"AJ says ah'm still too little to buck fer tha' apples, but ah think ah'm ready! Sometimes, it feels like she doesn't think so." The little yellow filly sat down on her haunches, looking rather dejected. A pang when through her older sister's heart as she watched the scene, but then Ash approached the filly.
"Apple-bucking is really hard work, but I'm sure she knows you're super strong." Ash said gently, sitting next to Applebloom. "Y'know, AJ and Big Mac are sure lucky to have such a hard-working, caring sister like you. I always wanted a little sister, and if she would have been anything like you, I woulda been real proud." Ash lifted a hoof and rested it gently on AB's shoulder. The filly smiled up at her new companion.
"Ah try to be a good sister. Ah've never saved Equestria, or am super duper strong like my brother..." she trailed off. "Yer ma and pa never gave ya any siblings?" Ash's eyes widened, and AJ had to hold back a giggle at what he may have just gotten himself into (thank heaven AJ had that particular conversation with her and her friends a few months prior). However, Ash didn't start tiptoeing around the birds and the bees. Instead, his expression softened and his eyes dropped slightly.
"My ma actually passed away when I was real little. My pa never found another lady like her, so its just been me and him." Ash explained softly. AJ's ears pricked at this new information. AB looked up as well, her expression slightly surprised before she actually leaned into the older pony.
"My ma and pa died when ah was just a baby. Ah've just had Granny, and Applejack and Big Mac, ah course." She said quietly, pausing a moment. "Ah wish ah'd known 'em better. Everypony talks about how great they were n' stuff. Ah wish ah got to know too." AJ felt a few pricks of liquid tickle her eyelid as Ash pulled the filly closer.
"Ya know, I'm sure your ma and pa are super proud of what you're doin' with your life. You're helpin' your friends find their cutie marks and helpin' your family on the farm. And your sister has told me this farm was your parent's everything. I think they'd be pretty proud of you for working so hard." Ash finished, lifting a heavy hoof and gesturing to the orchard before them. AB didn't answer, but reached up and gave her new friend a grateful hug, which the bounty hunter returned.
In that moment, Applejack's fear dissolved and she knew her family indeed had a new friend...

And, finally, here is chapter two to Apples to Ashes. Much like the second chapter of Rare Kind of Happy, this is focusing on the building relationship between Applejack and Ash Bark. These two are still a tad hesitant (and of course, the ever-tough AJ hasn't ever really let her guard down to a stallion outside her brother before.)
I am sorry about the slight delay guys, there was a ton of craziness going on at work and I was also preparing for my very first real vacation! I am so excited, and I'll post about it soon! As always, comments are deeply appreciated.

*inhales*
its so precious and adorable i think im gonna dieeeeeee
Okay, now that that’s out of the way, I’ve got some more coherent things to say about this piece. First off, the art is another wonderful addition to your gallery and I’m particularly impressed by the shadow and perspective effects with AJ. Also, the perspective is just. So. Perfect. I just love seeing sweet little AB staring up in wonder at this scared ‘stranger’, who in turn looks so brotherly ( which is perfect when you know he is her future brother-in-law) Just perfect.
As for the story, it felt pretty filler- like a scene in between the meat of the story. Or like icing in the middle off a two layered cake! And boi do i love icing. This flavor in particular was superb! I love the ‘future love interest befriends each member of main character’s family and it slowlys wears away at the walls they have’ trope and honestly, I don’t think it’s used as much as it should be. And the way you used it was entertaining and rather believeable!
For Big Mac, I think the two of them ‘bro-bonding’ over board games (thattotalywasntanodtohowyouplayedgamesduringyourworkwhenitgotboring) was a perfect choice for these two. It seems so natural and the image of a bandaged Mac laughing with Ash over his bed littered with figurenes and such is quite heartwarming. I Stan these bros being bros.
The scene with Granny Smith, I’ll admit, it took me a bit by surprise at first. But really, ‘chiropractor’ Ash giving Granny a much needed massage was gold. I bet he deals with a lot of cricks and pains on his job and knowing how to crack ‘em out makes sense. Also, I may or may not doodle blushing AJ running out of the room when Granny not so subtly suggests she gets one as well.
But the one that took the cake was AB. Sure, the dialogue was a little predictable, talking about dead parental figures and all, but it had some clever twists to it all that made it all work really well! Particularly the comic nod to the ‘birds and bees’ joke ( which I totally want to see art of AJ telling the cmc btw). And of course, it was awfully sweet to see them bond and Ash be the pseudo brother to her. :3
yes aj, that’s it.
let down your barriers and embrace the friendship of this ruggedly ripped man
also you could physically embrace him as well it’s okay we won’t judge.

mmm yis gimme all that pachaaaaaaaa
I've been really studying videos on YT that focus on shading/lighting (as much as time permits to practice lol). I've still got a ways to go but I am quite pleased on how this piece came out in the shading department.
And yerp, this ended up being a filler chapter. I really want to establish the main beat of the story here in the next two chapters so we just kinda had to kickstart this whole song and dance. Plus its so uber easy to go into the full description of each individual instance of family bonding, but I didn't want these chapters to end up like an overly long Savior chapter. I wanted to keep it fairly short and sweet to keep readers engaged and doesn't bore them too quickly. I really did love to start integrating Ash into the family. I'd imagine it was a little easier on Sugar Belle to become an Apple since she's such a sweet mare, and of course, the family is used to living with a bunch of ladies and head stallion. I wanted to make it clear that although Big Mac does indeed feel threatened that his position as future-patriarch is challenged, but Ash is merely a puzzle piece to add on, not a dictator to the family. Plus Big Mac needs some more fella friends, he's always stuck on that farm (plus he's getting his flank kicked in Ogres and Oubliettes and needs some backup)
(originally i wrote that he learned how to massage from braeburn but eh we'll discuss braeburn in the next couple chapters). But I wanted something funny as far as Ash's bonding with Granny, because I just feel that relationship would be full of snark and laughs. Granny's keepin' an eagle eye on this fella who is looking at her granddaughter a little too much to be causal. She was married for a long time before becoming a widow (I'd imagine) so she's makin' sure this fella is a good enough one, and during such, becomes quite fond of him. also i kinda witnessed something similar once lol I thought my brother was pushing my mom when in fact he was cracking her back lol.
Eh, sometimes I do allow myself to treat myself and use some tropes so close to my heart - one of which including bonding over dead/missing/neglectful family. Plus I wanted to set up the premise that Ash is going to learn more about Pear Butter and Bright Mac - and, ergo, how they actually died (at least in my headcannon of course).
*pushes aj towards ash because i am the author and i can new chapters are coming soon i hit the ground running right after vacay lol*

Eeey, good on ya! I hope those videos are doing ya good! I usually use Pinterest as my main source for tips and such, but whatever works for you! And if this piece is any indication, I’d say you’re on the right track.
That makes sense, and honestly, I’m glad it was filler. It was like a warm-up in a way for the amazing character interactions and plot line that I know is gonna follow! This piece is just cracking it’s knuckles before the real battle begins- the battle for AJ’s heart! >:3 Also, I agree that keeping it at a fairrrly short length does help the pacing of this story- especially when it comes to filler. I thought it was paced rather well! ^^ You’re right- aside from maybe Spike and a Discord once in a while, Big Mac doesn’t really interact with those of his gender- or his species for that matter! I guess Ash is an answer to more than one prayer if ya know what I mean.
Yes I am so down for sassy Granny and snarky Ash having playful banter and exchanging gossip that Ash pretends not to care about asaaahhhh! XD Also I got a chuckle out of the origin of this scene. Life sure gives some of the best inspiration for stories!
