Description (EDIT): BY THE WAY, GUYS. This was drawn AND submitted WAY before notch even MADE it so you could see drips before you mined into water or lava.
Ok?
Don't make a comment about it - I already know.
-------------------
I actually absolutely adore everything about Minecraft but there are some things that irk me sometimes

Number 1.
Mining into water.

Not that it's hard to grab a spare block and plug up the leak and keep going once the water's receded but omfg!! You get washed away first and moving in water is slowwwww lol!

i was mining below earth, for 48 gold veins, 27 iron vains, 32 of that red stuff, and to stacks of 64 dimonds. my final days down their was some coal... for torches... and smelting all my veins. and the first coal i smashed into send a pool of lava into me... burned me to death. AND THEN IT MELTED EVERYTHING I HAD ON ME!!!!!!!!

This hasn't happened to me yet, but oh dear God there is a constant fear of this.

Well, technically it did, but it was a chute of water that went straight down, so I swam up it, and lo and behold, a gold block, a bunch of Redstone, and my first diamonds. : D Scared the crap out of me when I saw the water though.

fav'd

Wait 'till you back into a deep and narrow pool of lava while packing diamond equipment and armor, and with a nice load of raw diamonds and all sorts of ore...

Idene In reply to Tounushi [2011-01-21 04:47:51 +0000 UTC]

Well I already know a similar pain. I would constantly lose my house when I would get a very good one built and have some good equipment. All of my equipment was lost, several times. :I

Tounushi In reply to Idene [2011-01-21 05:14:37 +0000 UTC]

I've built two houses of stone, and a third one is coming up. One is my main base, with my mining complex and Hell Cathedral (portal chamber) underneath, the other is my spawn sanctuary with a rail link to my main building. I intend to build a third building of stone and glass, going from the highest allowed point all the way down to bedrock, with the walls made of glass and showing a small crossection of the earth underneath.

Idene In reply to Tounushi [2011-01-21 19:30:59 +0000 UTC]

I was trying something similar to your latest house. I was making a house that was to be built underwater, and would have a tunnel that would go straight down made of glass. Initial idea didn't work too well, but I think I found a better idea of doing it.

Have you explored your area at much length yet? I'm basically working on a small plot of land, with long-term plans to branch out.
Are there any real seas in minecraft, or is it all randomly generater lakes and ponds? I mean the landscape looks like something generated with Photoshop's render>cloud function, not continents, islands, seas and oceans.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Idene In reply to Tounushi [2011-01-22 06:38:38 +0000 UTC]

Quite at length under my home. I've just had too many times where I lost my house after I died, and even with a diamond sword, I don't trust myself against spiders.

There's a good sea in my area I think. There's still land around it, but I think it's pretty big.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tounushi In reply to Idene [2011-01-22 11:03:03 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, spiders are annoying. They take a lot of health per hit, and there's no recovery time for hits.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Idene In reply to Tounushi [2011-01-22 23:15:53 +0000 UTC]

Oy, I've gotten gang raped by too many damn spiders and zombies. Skeletons too. You have to go at them with a wide angle, otherwise they'll shoot you non stop. ._.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tounushi In reply to Idene [2011-01-23 00:11:52 +0000 UTC]

Often when I try getting a jumping slash or shot at the skellies, THEY SHOOT ME WITH UNNERVING ACCURACY AND TIMING!
Spiraling path with a sword is the surest way. Circle-strafe while closing the distance. They have trouble hitting. But you need plenty of room.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Idene In reply to Tounushi [2011-01-23 17:40:11 +0000 UTC]

Oooooh yeah on the room part.

Well, I found this one awesome room in my newest world where I was primarily working on crops, and there was this pretty big cavern, had a skeleton, zombie, and a creeper, and I killed and explored, and it went deeper and deeper and I had 12 Iron Ores, and was excited because I got down to a lava cavern with Lapiz Lazuli... and I fell in the lava while avoiding skeletons. I wanted to get back out, but I couldn't find my way, even with highly distinguishable water areas and my torches. T.T Now, I know the pain you talked about earlier.

So I went back to my reliable diamond rich world with a hunger for sugar cane *after I stupidly used all the immediately available sugar cane for books for a bookshelf.* found it, and am about to start growing it. I have a good little wheat field so far. :3

A nice idea when making a farm (esp. when fenced) is to make a silo for storage.
Make a 2x2 spiraling staircase out of stair blocks and each level has double-wide boxes on the walls.
So the silo would be like this:
O O B B O O
O B X X B O
B X S S X B
B X S S X B
O B X X B O
O O B B O O

O = outside
B = block (stone, wood, whatev)
S = stair block
X = box slot (three blocks high: base, box, open space with torches)

A farm is also good to plan as a grid. I use 2x4 patches for sugarcane and 4x4 patches for wheat, and each patch is separated by a canal covered with a stone slab.
But I hear that it is a good plan of having three-block-wide strips for wheat and two-block-wide strips for cane.

Idene In reply to Tounushi [2011-01-24 17:12:09 +0000 UTC]

My god. That is incredibly helpful! I use a generic plan for planting wheat and sugar cane of just planting blocks of dirt *seen from the side* like this.
W=Wheat
Dirt
X=Sand I destroyed
S=Sand

WWWWWW
DDDDDD
XXXXXX
SSSSSS

And like you said, I covered the water with stone slabs.

I'm building another forward base using an underwater mine probably, with a light house a la Bioshock up top, and will DEFINITELY use the advice from a silo. It's in the middle of the water, so I can easily have a little floating farm a little silo next to it. I'll have to post some screen shots when I get it done. :3
