Is this vector? It looks vector.

Yay, I get to be helpful!

Oookay, lessee.... in computer terms, images can be divided into raster and vector. Raster images are composed of pixels, and the file size is directly linked to the image size. Every pixel has to have its position and color saved in the file, so the more pixels there are, the more information must be saved. Vector images, on the other hand, draw and position lines and shapes using mathematical formulas. A circle's information, for instance, would include the mathematical formula for a circle, the center point, the multiplier for the size the circle is scaled to, due to either zoom or being manually stretched, and so on. This results in smaller image files that don't lose clarity or sharpness when zoomed in or out. Whereas a raster image would have to say "Okay, go to this pixel here, and make it this color, then go to the next one and make it this color, then go to the next one and make it this color..." a vector image just says Okay, go here, then draw this shape. However, the downside is that vector images are much more difficult to make especially detailed or intricate, or to make look realistic.

On a semi-related note, I don't think you can actually submit still images to this site as vector files. You usually have to convert them to a raster-based file. The best to use, in terms of keeping your image as close to the original as possible, would be either GIF or PNG. According to Wikipedia (for whatever that's worth), PNG seems to be superior to GIF, but unlike GIF, it doesn't do animation, and it's not as widely supported. Since it is supported here though, I'd recommend submitting your images like that.

Most, if not all, image making programs focus largely on one or the other. The two vector-based programs of which I am aware are Flash and Inkscape, although I'm sure there are plenty more. The other kind would be anything like Photoshop or even MSPaint.

So I guess a more direct question would be, "What program did you use to make this?"

SO MUCH HELP

MY BRAIN WENT POP xD

N'aww I use a program called Paint Tool SAI which doesn't have shape tools such as eclipses and such but the lineart layer lets you turn the line a different colour, edit the line, make curve lines or straight lines and also let's you adjust thickness and length
Then i just colour on layers underneath

Actually, it would appear that SAI has a vector tool for linework, kind of like inking. Is that what you're talking about?

Yus! That's it, so, it is vector lol!

VaguelyCreepy In reply to Celestialess [2011-10-24 07:15:29 +0000 UTC]

Partially, it would seem. If only the inking tool is vector, that means the rest is raster, and if I read correctly, the program doesn't export to a vector file, meaning once you save it as something that any program could open, it becomes fully raster. I may need to look into getting this.

Anyway, what I wanted to know from all of this was how you made the outlines end in points. For instance, look at where his jaw meets his neck, or where his leg meets his... hip? It's a little hard to tell on a pony. Anyway, see how those lines are kind of pointy at the end? Is there something you're doing to get that, or is it just how it comes out on its own?

Also, thank you for faving!

No problem

And to answer that question I draw on a tablet laptop so i'm up against the screen and pressure settings apply as well.
But if I need to alter a line to be just a little bit pointier there is a tool for the lineart layer to increase or decrease the width of a line, so I just grab the end point of a line and slide it to the left/right whichever way decreases it.

also you can get SAI here, free [link]

Tablet laptop? They have those? Lucky!

I see. Handy to know. And thanks for the link, but I always feel better if i pay for something. (And it probably helps that it's relatively cheap - the cost of the latest version of Flash is nuts!)

Rofl yeah

WTF Flash - make it so no one with any talent with the program CAN afford it

VaguelyCreepy In reply to Celestialess [2011-10-24 08:07:48 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, well, all they really care about is moving it to people who can afford it - big businesses and stuff. Get the pros, the people who are going to be using that sort of thing their whole lives hooked on it, then you'll always have groups with ridiculously deep pockets clambering to buy the latest version. Which is pretty stupid in its own right, because the price is just going to drop in a few months, then drop again when they come out with the new version.

Then again, if people didn't buy the ridiculously-overpriced new versions, they'd stop making working on them, and it would stagnate. It's lose-lose.

he IS a gay pony. His talent is drinking Battery Acid and basically BEING a living battery because he drinks it, it enhances his magic (which is powering things like generators and such )
