Description
This was drawn for me by Commission info on his page (very much recommended!)
One of the final scenes of the Star Wars novel, 'Lost Stars' by Claudia Gray: Thane Kyrell visiting Ciena Ree in the New Republic detention center.
I'm a massive fan of the old Star Wars Expanded Universe, but I actually think Lost Stars is the best ever Star Wars novel. Lost Stars takes us behind the scenes of the Original Trilogy and gives us a realistic and sympathetic look at the men and women fighting on both sides of the Galactic Civil War.
Lost Stars tells us the story of a boy and a girl. Though Ciena Ree is from a poor family and Thane Kyrell is from a rich family, they become friends and with a shared interest in the Imperial military, they go to the Imperial Academy on Coruscant and train to become Imperial officers, becoming lovers along the way.
Things go wrong when Thane becomes disillusioned with the Empire and joins the Rebels, while Ciena remains loyal. They find themselves fighting on opposite sides at the Battle of Endor.
After the death of Palpatine on the second Death Star, Ciena becomes captain of her own Star Destroyer. When this is boarded by Thane and his Rebels, she sends it hurtling towards the planet Jakku (where it becomes the wrecked Star Destroyer seen in The Force Awakens). Ciena tries to end her life by crashing with her ship, but Thane overpowers her, forcing her into an escape pod. She is then taken prisoner by the New Republic and is held in jail, facing trial for war crimes.
Visiting her in jail, Thane tells Ciena he thinks the charges against her will be dropped, but regardless, he will always be there for her.
I thought it was smart that Claudia Gray gave us a slightly downbeat, uncertain ending, reflecting the messy reality of life, where the ending is not always happy and good people do end up fighting for bad causes. It would have been far too easy to redeem Ciena by having her join the Rebels.

Yes, it's a sad ending.

I wonder what will become of her if she is released. Β Pirate captain out there fighting on to restore the empire, criminal spacer working for the Hutta, or something else? Β Wars end in chaotic ways, and a bad peace tends to close off most normal options for at least some people on the losing side.

It's hard to imagine her getting involved in any kind of criminality. Maybe she would return to her own planet and take up farming.
