Thank you very much!
How i did it....? Try to picture a really REALLY cold night (well, just below zero actually, but to me that's COLD) and not beeing able to sleep.... And it's snowing and raining.... And i just happen to look outside and see these drops on my balcony railing... i get my tripod, camera and flashlight and goes out, takes a bunch of pictures holding the flashlight in many different angles. Then i get back inside, and put the pics in the computer and decides which one is the best, reduce the size and submit it. That's about it...
The important things are, i guess, take MANY pics of whatever you're shooting, ao you can pick that special one later

Thats a really great shot, has a very surreal feeling to it. I like the play of light and shadow.

this is just stunningly beautiful. i like that you made a rusty, dirty old pipe with frozen water on it look so poetic an lovely.

Thank you
But actually, it is no rusty pipe, it is a metal rod on my balcony, that is supposed to hold some kind of curtain or something. It's painted in a boring red rustproofing paint, and it was snowing/raining last night, and thats how it became so clear ice, really cold and fresh rain. And believe me, it was cold standing there with camera in one hand and a flashlight in the other

aaah. now i see. yeah, i've braved some very cold pouring pain before to get the good shot i wanted. Why does rain have to make everything so pretty and reflecty at night?!? *sigh*
i bet the fact that you used a flashlight instead of a flash is one of the reasons it looks so nice. camera flashes tend to burn out details and flatten the image. but a flashlight, especially if it's from an angle, can give a really nice, soft light.
hey, just looked at your gallerie, too. cool, stuff! i'll have to keep an eye on you.

The first item on my wish list is a water protection for my camera, but they are terribly expensive
Yes, i agree on the camera flash thing, i try to use it as little as possible. In this pic i hold the flashlight 90degrees left from the camera, so the light goes into the ice drops, and thats why they appear to glow, and also why the small drops on the side of the metal bar looks so sharp.

oooh. water protection. then i could wander about the city at night in the pouting rain taking tripod pictures to my heart's content without worrying about water damage to my camera... *wish wish wish*
ooooh. skills. i gotta do more darkroom work. learning to create my own good lighting. right now i'm just kind of a wanderer. as in i just wander around an area taking random pictures and working with the existing light. gotta take a darkroom class to i can learn to manipulate it.
lovely light reflections. you, my friend, have the skills.

I have found two different water protection gizmos, one is even good for diving (but i don't know if i'd dare to trust it to actually drown my precious camera under water...), this is the one: [link] , well there is two actually, one with room for a flash.
The other one is a rain protection, and that one is a lot cheaper, and could work for my needs: The C-AF cape a bit down on this page: [link]
There are products for most cameras there, their main page is: [link]
I really hope i can get one of those some day, it would be soooooooo cool to be able to take pictures of rough weather
Thank you so very much for your nice comment about skill

mmm. i should start keeping a list of stuff so i can just give it to my parent's for holidays... ha ha.
yeah. i think i'd want a DSL (or a lese compatible digital) before i start buying toys like that stuff, though. otherwise i never know if i'll be able to use it on my next camera.

I don't think i'll buy a new camera for a looong time, definitely not one that costs as much as a car... So i'll try to upgrade my current one with these kind of accessories

SquirrelQueen In reply to CerebralCortex [2004-12-25 08:34:06 +0000 UTC]
hmmm. yeah. instead of accessories, i just seem to be starting a random camera collection. i think the count now stands at four. on poleroid, my Rebel, the Digital (i can never remeber the brand...), and now an old manual 35mm that my aunt just gave me last night. which i'm really excited about playing with. seems to me that a good ole' old fashion manual just forces you to have Much more awareness and mindfulness of the shots you take to get them set up right and get the shot you want. i hope if i practice with the manual for a while it'll bring the quality of my digital work up a notch.

well, yeah. when i got my digital rebel i had trouble not letting myself use the Auto. i still got some lovely pics, but i find they turn out better when i take control.

naw... auto's lame. and i have no idea what to do with P. if i'm adjusting one of the settings, it's stupid not to be adjusting the other for each pic.
i do use the auto setting when i'm at parties taking pics of family and friends though. 'cause they just have no patience for waiting for me to set up the shot. and i Hate posing people. just wait 'till they're not paying attention and snap it. which they think is evil, but i think gets Much better shots.

I know what you mean with the manual settings. My old SLR camera has only got time automatics, so i have to do most things manually, and now that i got my digital camera, i only use the same M setting, AUTO and P is no fun to use...

SquirrelQueen In reply to CerebralCortex [2004-12-30 22:32:55 +0000 UTC]
yeah. auto's lame cause when you get a good picture with it, i don't really think you can take credit for it. you didn't descide to make it that aperature or f-stop, the camera just did it for you. no artistic integrity.

It's true, but sometime's there's a bit of artistic in finding and taking the picture even with auto

Thanx, i'm not quite used to read "amazing work" about my stuff, and i feel strange about it, but thank you very much indeed!
About the flashlight, i like to use it as the only source of light. It's a surefire [link] , a very bright light, some 65 lumen and its one big bright cone of light, no dark parts as there usually is in flashlights.
I have two other pictures in my gallery that is taken using the flashlight, [link] and [link]
