First draft.
And you need a subscription to use journal CSS, btw... @_@
This is the second of three parts, the others dealing with additional layout features and coding. If you find this tutorial helpful, please link back or favourite so other people can find it.

This is a really good and helpful tutorial thank you so much for making it. I do have a question though, a stupid question maybe I dont know. Where in the code do I put the background I made? o.o I have tried placing it several places, but it doesnt appear when I preview it.

This is fairly easy to follow, but kind of difficult for me as well. I'm not very good with photoshop yet and also I'm not used to this type of coding/design work etc. I can of course play aorund with this and my header and stuff and see if I get it better and such. But I have a question- do you make the mockup thing on a totally knew page or on the same page as your header image, but with new layers?

Do u have to make rounded edges? cause, my ps doesnt have the path selection tool, so i cant do the edges, will the journal still work? D:

Oh, sure! You don't even need the corners necessarily. You can add/cut/copypaste whatever is useful to you, leave the rest. Trial and error in editing the code will show you what all does what. Send any more specific questions my way, too!

How big should the title text be? ...Or can it be however big you want it to be? xD;;
Thanks so much for making this, it's so useful!

I have a question. My friend made her own journal skin, and she doesn't have a subscription, yet she was able to use it. Does that mean you have to write your own CSS?

Greatly explained!
Does the whole thing works like : Make an image, then code it?

Overall that's the theory behind it. I work that direction, some people work the other way around.

Oh, good! Please do not hesitate to send me any questions you have along the way, though! Part III is perhaps a bit more scatterbrained.
Good luck with your journal!

These tutorials were great. Easy to follow, fun to read, good art and great humour. However, I feel it is all for naught without completing it. Is Part III foreseen anywhere in the near future? The coding is just as - if not more - difficult than the actual art!
Either way, good job, and thanks for helping newbie CSS-ers like me with a few tips.

This has been extremely helpful, and really got me excited about making my own CSS Layout, but there's no link to a part three. Has it not been made yet?
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
cerena In reply to see03 [2008-12-21 18:12:33 +0000 UTC]
No, part three is on the way! I'm working on it as we speak. It's tricky, cause I want it to be good to help with the coding but still be visually interesting. AUGH ITS TAKING FEREVER LAME
I promise to get it done A-S-A-P!
If you'd like to try wading through the code (it's the one that comes with the pack by mindfuckx), it's not terribly difficult to figure out, there's just a few places you have to change. But I'll have this out in a jiffy I hope.

I'll wait for the rest of your tutorial. I actually found a site that does all the coding for you, so I used that to create a basic one, so I'm great for now. But I just LOVED your first two parts of this tutorial. Very fun.

Going to give this whole CSS thing a try over the holidays, but I guess the third part will be the one I'll most need.... just don't get this stuff although I tried to learn HTML...
Great tutorials, if the third one turns out like the first two, I'm so saved!
Thank you so much!

I love your two CSS tutorials Very helpful, can't wait for the last part. But I just find kinda boring to have to save each title for each journal you post :/
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
cerena In reply to LuisaRafidi [2008-10-01 05:25:13 +0000 UTC]
Each title... for the little header words? The way I do it is I have words delineating the various sections of my journal, but then for something funny I'll do a specific title in it. The title at the top (that says the title of the entry like in a normal journal) is actually done with code and overlays the image, so that's updated with the code, and then you can save images to use as headers ("Holla" for the main entry, "Featured" "friends" etc). :3 But sometimes for fun throw an image in there maybe.
I also save an image as my signature to my journal--if you save it as a transparent background .png it works really well on the background!
And thank you so much for reading and commenting. I promise to have the third CSS out as soon as humanly possible. It is the first project after my commissions. Haha, have not forgotten! I hope that after they are done people can try this layout and through making it learn a little bit about coding and design and problem solving so they can expand into new creative designs.
Maybe too idealistic, heh.
