Description So I'm making another one and thought I'd take pictures of the process, what I do. I don't know why, just.. thought I'd share. I'm constantly refining it so this is slightly different than Fear Darrig, and rather different than Otto and so on, at least of those works I have taken photos of and made available. This particular method I like very much though. Deirdre's played with it quite a bit and it's no worse for wear, so this is not a fragile doll or dollmaking method. The head armature is there for proportion, it twists off to be sculpted over and baked separately.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Here we have the doll as seen with batting applied. This is the "sticky" quilting batting, split thin and wrapped around the body of the doll many times and fairly tight, to make it more difficult to feel wire and to increase the strength of the doll. I do this for those two reasons only so I don't completely fill out the doll just yet to every exact proportion, that comes later. If I did that now, it would be more difficult to pull on the body stocking.

Once that is done, I place the wrapped doll over some stretchy fabric on the bias and trace the outline with a pencil. Although more wasteful of fabric, cutting on the bias eliminates width-wise bumps and ridges and stretches smoothly (and more) over the stuffing. When I'm done tracing, I then draw a seam allowance around the trace marks and add a bit more allowance here and there in the areas I plan to stuff especially thickly (in this case, the abdomen).

I found a cheats way to do this is to wrap bandages round, basically building up certain areas to get shapes. Okay so it's nowhere near as good as this, but it's a lot easier for those who aren't as skillful yet!

Where did you learn to do this originally? Did you take classes or do you have a friend who does it or something? I'm really good at sculpting and I wish I could use that for something like this.

Trial, error & a lot of research.

What, exactly, is sticky quilt batting (I don't quilt, so I'm not sure what you mean ) Is it easily available?

I can't remember the brand name. It comes in rolls rather than loose fluff, presumably so that quilters can just put an even layer down without a lot of fuss. It says for quilting on the label. I think my pack was $20 for enough for a blanket but it goes a long way with dolls.

Hmm.. thank you! I have to go to JoAnn's today or tomorrow, I'm going to go look for some. My mind just went through flips thinking of odd things I could use that for...
