There are a lot of differences (been in college and learned that)but in theory, viruses can't avoid individuals, they just don't infect them or get destroyed by the immune system. Mutagens (don't work that way in our world) just change genetic background according to Scy-Fi. Not the same thing, but if viruses avoid the director, there's no telling what would happen with a mutagen. CAUSE SCIENCE! (and sry for the long post)

How did Lukas drive without any legs? Maybe that can be another adaptation for the car. Driving without any foot pedals. Just some nobs or switches on the wheel. That, or he coordinated with Geenie to press the petals when told. That takes skill.
