Interesting question; Would Doug necessarily get jokes in Japanese? Just because he knows the language doesn't mean he'd get the cultural humour, does it?

I do believe he would, because...
He does not just magically know a language just like that. His subconscious does quantum leaps in association, even when given almost no material to work with.
Show him a few symbols, with little relationship among them, and he will start decyphering the language with them, when no one else could.
This would be applied to him knowing (thanks to how his powers work), exactly what makes a joke funny. Except if it is an inner joke or a regional joke, if it is a language joke, he would get it alright.
That's what I think.

I can't take all the credit. A boy from a New Mutants forum (some time ago) asked for a pic with Doug and Wade. I would have never drawn them together on my own. I did try to draw a funny situation with both of them
