Description
Friends Doug Ramsey and Warlock, during a soulmerge.A true love story between two friends destined to meet a tragic end.
Inspired by Savage Garden's "The best thing".
The New Mutants, Cypher, Warlock, and Douglock are copyrighted by Marvel Comics.
###
Never want to fly,
never want to leave,
never want to say what you mean to me;
never want to run
frightened to believe
you're the best thing about me.
Sometimes I feel like this is only chemistry,
stuck in a maze searching for a way to
shut down, turn around, feel the ground beneath me,
you're so close, where do you end, where do I begin?
Always pushing and pulling.
Sometimes sanity takes vacation time on me,
I'm in a daze stumbling bewildered,
north of gravity head up in the stratosphere,
you and I, roller coaster riding love,
you're the center of adrenaline
and I'm beginning to understand...
Never want to fly,
never want to leave,
never want to say what you mean to me;
never want to run
frightened to believe
you're the best thing about me.
Walk on broken glass, make my way through fire,
these are the things I would do for love;
farewell peace of mind, kiss goodbye to reason,
up is down, the impossible occurs each day;
this intoxication thrills me
I only pray it doesn't kill me.
Never want to fly,
never want to leave,
never want to say what you mean to me;
never want to run
frightened to believe
you're the best thing about me.
You're the center of adrenaline
and I'm beginning to understand
you could be the best thing about me.
You could be the best thing about me,
what if you're the best thing about me?

It's funny... When I first looked at this, my initial thought was that Doug looks rather feminine in it.Β Looking at it now, though, I really don't see that.Β It might have just been that his midriff is exposed; you don't see that nearly as often with males as you do with females.
Interesting how you depict the merge as a bit more visceral than it was in the comics.Β The tube passing through his shirt and apparently into his chest, in particular, is almost Giger-esque.
At the same time, they both look like they're having a terrific time.Β I like how Warlock seems "infected" by Doug's sense of adventure and excitement, and even assumes a vaguely cranium-shaped head.Β It's a look that works for him.

Perhaps not in comics, but in real life one can seeΒ guys in the streetΒ who do physical activities like skating, breakdancing and the like, and they always are showing their midriffs. With the kind of wind that there must be at that height, Doug's shirt would be moving like that.
All of those good feelings and the scarier aspects of their merging I got from that Savage Garden song, where the "partner" is mentioned to be "the best thing" of the speaker, who is now losing his sense of self or individuality, realizes the danger, but cannot stop seeking the feelings he get from the relationship. The song's rhythm also influenced the picture.

Sorry, I should have clarified; I did mean specifically in comics art, not in real life (or even in other fictional media).Β And I do think it makes sense for Doug's shirt to blow around like that.Β I just wanted to explain my reaction.

I did realize you meant that, and that is why my comment starts specifying it is related to what I see in real-life.
I do get what you mean about men in comics not showing this part of their bodies. They can show the chest or the whole torso, but not this part alone.

Yes, the villain song (Radcliffe's). It is a play on "mine" (related to get gold from the earth) and "mine", the possessive pronoun.

Cypher is one of my favorite characters, along with Iceman and Mass Master. You can see othe Cypher pics in my gallery, including one I just submitted now, of him and Tarot .
Glad you liked this pic.

I feel so bad for Cypher, his only power was the ability to understand any language instantly, it was pretty obvious that he was doomed during a fight with someone much more powerful than him, but Warlock was VERY powerful! and HE died too!

The two more human New Mutants (besides Rahne) died...

"Rahne"? as in "Wolfsbane"?

Cesar-Hernandez In reply to zippymax [2010-05-16 19:14:45 +0000 UTC]
Yup. Warlock, Doug and Rahne were the ones who cared more about others. Two out of three were killed in the series...

Oh! Okay... But, didn't you say Rahne was dead?

No, no, I said two of the three more human NMs died (the two more human besides Rahne, not that Rahne died). Sorry about the misunderstanding.
