Check out the Exercise and Download the Practice Sheet HEREExercise 34 (E34) – Style Imitation EXERCISE: To re-create the same subject matter in different distinct styles.
2015 is here! And we are jumping right back into our 2 week exercises! This one may be a bit more challenging but not physically but mentally having to think outside the box and having to really analyze another artist’s work and how they create their pieces. I am asking you to take a character of yours (could be fan art but much prefer it to be your own OC) and then look at 3 other artists that have a distinct style and do your best at creating this character in their style. Now this isn’t an exercise to learn how to take someone else style and call it your own, that’s stealing another style. The goal is for you to have to analyze and interpret their process of creation. From this thinking you may learn so much about how you work, what could be improved on, and hopefully add something new to your own style that you weren’t seeing before.
So download the .PSD below and pick three artists that stick out to you, preferably ones you look up to and admire their pieces. From their take the time to use different brushes, techniques, and whatever it may be to get your drawing to look as though they created it. You could also dig into research to see if they did a step by step and follow some of those tips. You may surprise yourself with how simple something may be to create sometimes, it’s like taking when a magician reveals his trick. Once you have that knowledge, the illusion fades, and you are able to have the mindset of “I can do this!”
For example, I will most likely be doing Zeronis , SakimiChan , and Feverworm . Paul Kwon and Sakimi both have Patreons, which if you aren’t familiar I would do some research as it is an up and coming site used by a few higher end digital artists and for some it’s their full time job. BUT while you are able to download their source files, brushes, etc. it does no good if you aren’t able to break down their process for yourself. So this exercise challenges just that!
Sometimes confidence is what separates an artist that is recycling the same level of quality and an artist that is actively progression their own skill level.

Style Imitations
Hmmm I think this was a very good exercise, as I learned a lot from the repetitions I noticed in the three styles.
