I really love the concept of this. AND I love Chess. Doing it freehand and while at work just rounds out the "cool" factor for me. Well done!!

And may I ask if you chose your Queen wisely?

Love it! For critique: I'd say the grids on the two planes that the queens sit on look a little off, but I did not notice it till I was nit-picky. Over all I really like this drawing. Keep up the good work!

If you mind I ask, as I LOVE using pen over pencil, how did you create shadow/shade things? I tend to turn to crosshatching, which works but I could never create a gradient with it.

No, I don't mind. I do layers and cross hatching. It just depends on how much space I'm covering and what it is I'm doing. Pen is relatively new to me, so I'm still learning. I do most of these drawings while at work, which is why I have been using a pen. If I had pencils at work, I'm sure I'd use that instead. But, the pen is growing on me.
I would say just use what you think works best for you. personally, I like to starts soft and light, and build up the depth with multiple layers. I hope this helps. -CM
