Yay! another picture of Sunset Shimmer. I recognize this as her first appearance outside her concealing cloak. I think she looks better as a pony than a human. Alas this is the only scene I have seen so far with her like that. In my mind I can hear Sunset say "Sorry it had to be this way, Princess [Twilight]".

Once I finally watched the movie, I was like - another pony to add to my favorites list.Β The movie was pretty good, I enjoyed the ending.Β But I hope we haven't seen the last of Sunset Shimmer.Β Great vector by the way!

I saw that movie. I liked it personally. But i have one question. Why do the bad guys always get the cool designs.

They get the cool designs but the worst toys, if they're lucky enough to get a toy

Me neither, but the toys just show what's more important for the franchise and that the villains are just thrown in to make things "interesting"...I never paid attention to the toys to begin with but the Chrysalis toy was an eye-opener...in a bad way, again shows what they really care about...

She was created by Hasbro for the movie to sell her toy and their creepy human toys as a oneshot throwaway character we'll probably never see again as the events of Equestria Girls aren't canon to the show.

I thought she may have been a previous student of Celestia's school, but didn't get singled out like Twilight did and decided to run off to the human world as a way proving that she was the best by learning about a world that even Celestia wasn't fully knowledgeable on.

so she could amass an army of humans to go back into Equestria and conquer it, using the Magic Element of Harmony to turn herself into a demon which is why she stole the crown.
That's at least what they came up for a story for her, although I doubt Lauren Faust ever meant Celestia to have a previous student; like most of the major stuff that happens in Friendship is Magic nowadays, it's just stuff that Hasbro pulls to sell more toys, so there was no real premise to any of this and the whole thing to sell toys for this one movie is the reason she exists.
Personally this is my opinion; I think if Friendship is Magic will ever die it'll be from Hasbro's increasing influence and doing of crazy things to sell toys that'll be the end of the show, at least for me, as the writers and production/animation crew can only do so much to make the actual show look nice with the stuff Hasbro throws at them .

Well Celestia had a entire school dedicated to the study of magic. She just chose to personally mentor Twilight after seeing her raw talent and potential for magic. A privilege many others would have gave anything for.
As for that idea about the human army and demon things... There are some serious holes in that plot if Hasbro is seriously thinking of doing it. Two of them being that since there is no magic in the human world, who would believe Sunset if she told and the Elements of Harmony are called 'Elements of Harmony' not Disharmony. I doubt that those things even have the ability to channel negative energies to create something as evil as a demon.
I don't know if the Friendship is Magic series will die, but from the sound of it, Equestia Girls might not take off all that well if their just going to make up plots like that and just expect the audience to accept it. I'll have to see the movie to make a judgement call on that one.

Yes, I remember Celestia had other gifted unicorns, but the only one that was ever mentioned was Trixie, at least by Lauren. Here, they decided to make a new character out of nowhere based on Twilight minus friendship whose name actually means the same thing. The people who wrote the Sunset Shimmer quests at Gameloft for the mobile citybuilder game seemed to make her more of Twilight and being studious than Twilight herself, perhaps analogous to Lightning Dust having Rainbow Dash's more negative qualities.
There haven't been any toys of demon Sunset Shimmer revealed let alone any creepy anthro toys outside of the main cast, so I guess it was thrown into the movie by the writers to make it interesting, and not taken by Hasbro. Although if you don't mind spoilers from reading my last one, the whole thing was shortlived and Sunset Shimmer was reformed, but the pace of the whole scene made the whole reforming process happen a lot quicker that it didn't seem as convincing.
No matter what other people say, I think the movie is definitely worth watching.
