Description
When I saw the advertisement for the 2023 NYC Pride show I knew I needed to take a few of CAK’s dogs. With most of the staff being part of the LBGTQ+ community in some way, it would be good to show our support and presence. As such, I quickly began making note of what dogs would do well at the show. After a few days of communicating with the other staff on who would be attending the show and what dogs they thought would be good to take. In the end it was decided that Audrey, Aimee, Lita, and Allisandra would attend the show. With them would be Pie and Blue to enter the high jump competition, Squish, Skiddy, Soda, Hanni, and Jezabel to enter the conformation show, and Trixie, Danger, and Vese to enter the parade. This would total out to just over two dogs per handler, with three dogs being with their personal handlers.
With decisions made, all that was left was finalizing details. As always, CAK would be driving. This requires deciding which car to take, with ten dogs and four people we would need to use the larger modified transport van. A quick visit to the mechanic and the van had been given a full service and the go ahead to cross the country. Then all ten dogs visited the vet to have a full check-up. With clean bills of health, they were officially ready for the trip and the show itself. After that, all that was left was to make the necessary hotel reservations and pack the van.
The day of the show arrived with four groggy handlers fresh off a 42 hour drive. All the dogs were rested and ready to go, though the handlers were a little less awake. Lolita was coherent and up with the sun, somehow acting as though she hadn’t gotten into town three hours earlier. Allisandra was the worst of the bunch, sleeping while leaning against the kitchenettes counter.
At the show itself, the girls separated. Allisandra taking Blue and Pie to the high jump competition, Audrey taking Trixie, Vese, and Danger to the parade while Lolita and Aimee took the rest of the dogs to the confirmation ring.
Pie was up first out of the two CAK dogs for the high jump and performed excellently! She brought her A-game and was clearly eager to go each time her turn was up. Towards the end of her run she had some difficulty and had to climb the final bit of the wall. Once the height had exceeded her ability she was given a nice walk to cool down before being taken to join Audrey and her three at the parade.
