Description
Its funny that one of the few days in your life when you question yourself on which direction you are heading and for what purpose is your birthday. That day brings home alot of unanswered questions that lead you into a maze of thought about yourself as a person. That one day can change you, but not through a number, through realization.

great vision - there are so many comments so forgive me if I'm asking something already asked, but did you actually mean for the tape to start getting jumbled at 6? It's going along very straight until 6, when it then goes all the way 'up' until 12 - as if that's when you start realising you're alive in the world and getting to grips with who you are and where you're going and what it all means - then it takes a mad dive at 18...which is when it goes all outta control, which pretty much sums up my life anyway - so by the time it's reached 20, the numbers are too mangled up to understand - and I guess by the time I reached 20 is when I realised I haven't a clue what i'm doing with my life, where it's going or what is gonna happen - and yep, at the time of your birthday is when that realisation is even worse cos you realise that the last birthday only seemed like last week, so if that's a full year gone by without you having achieved anything and still not knowing where you're going, then are the next 60-odd going to fly by that fast too? In the big jumble illustrated above? Not to mention feeling old in your twenties cos if life is going to continue the way it's going then jeesh that's it, end of story until you can retire, when really you're too bluddy old and poor to do anything, not to mention probably not even having the energy or want to do anything.
so this piece really strikes a chord with me as you can see!

HOLY SHEEEITE KELLY ITS THE NEW BIBLE! only kidding of course. deeeepp....oooh soo deep.... and so perfect in your vision of it. the structure of the tape is mostly conincedental although i did spend ages getting the tape into a position i did like with the numbers clearly visible. the beginning of six was just really the best place for the first bend, compositionally and the rest sat in a mostly predetermined way.
<---------- thats what its all about... thats why i enjoy photography so much...every eye sees a different picture. and every concept has a different meaning. and every shot has the photographers character, and every shot can fit any life. thankyou Kelly. very much liked this comment.

Such wisdom here. Isnt true that we have many ages? A spiritual age, intellectuall age, emotional age ...but, the one that really "counts" is the chronilogical age, unfortunately. Great thoughtful piece

perfect words my friend, yup...it is a shame that the number is what seems to really count with people.
all we can do is respect our elders and teach our children and give them as much right as we give ourselves. and try to learn more of the individuals 'ages' and try to see more of the person that they truly are inside. thankyou for that lovely comment.

Pretty cool idea here. Makes me think about all the times that I looked at my life in relation to my age and how many times I got a moment of panic when I suspected I wasn't "measuring up" to society's standards for what a person my age should have accomplished by now. But then...I pull myself back and look at those around me that are also my age and realize my life could be worse which then makes me grateful for what I have accomplished. Excellent piece Ben.
I real brain stimulator.

i can totally identify with your words Laura. at the end of the day its just a personal way with dealing with everything, its a shame but so obvious that if you live your life in a clean white room and one day a dirty mark appears in it then you are going be upset. when i have those 'measuring up' moments i just remember my holiday in South Africa when i saw the miles and miles of shanty towns and i try my best to put everything into perspective. i think its not about material achievements but inner ones, if you can sit with yourself in a quiet moment and be internally happy with yourself, as a person then everything is going well in my book. i hate those little panicky moments when you think things could be rushing away from you but its nice to know that someone else deals with it in the same way i do. thankyou Laura.

ah thankyou very much my friend. really glad that you like it. it wasn't that hard really to set up, just time consuming, i used very fine thin white thread to hold up the tape at different bits and used a small stabilizer behind the badge. getting the light right was a little bit of a pain thought because of how thin the measuring tape was, all depending on the direction of the light i lost little pieces of detail on it so it took a while to get it right. hope that helps.
cheers again mate.

heh, thats not a silly question, the answer is no though, mine was on the 7th of december....sagitarius....free spirited, adventurous, fun but brutally honest sometimes. born in the chinese year of the snake, my matches are the rooster and the ox while the boar is my enemy. is was born at 7am weighing in at 7 pounds exactly in 1977....i wonder what my lucky number is?

i found out that by having the background perfectly white it just took away the depth of the tape, it made it seem like a top down view, and that was not what i intended. thankyou for your words.
