Description Done with pastels and pastel pencils. This was hard! The devil in those feather details and the bark. Eurgh

Constructive critiques more than welcome! I really want to know how this could be improved! Can critique things such as pastel technique, anatomy, hair bird details etc. The owl doesn't quite looks as good as the photo but oh well.

This is very beautiful! I love how you differentiate the difference in textures with the pastel: the way the girl's skin has a grainy texture, while the hair looks smooth and soft, and the texture from the tree is clearly different from the rest as well. The details on the owls feathers are incredibly well done, too! It looks very realistic.
I'm not sure about animal anatomy, but the owl's wing seems a little too low for where it is perched. Again, I'm not sure when it comes to animal anatomy, do it might just be me.
Besides that, the entire composition is very pretty. I like how the hole in the tree frames the girl and the owl in the center.
You did an incredible job with the pastels e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/>

Thank you so much! Although the girl's skin wasn't intentionally grainy  . Pastel didn't adhere to the paper after too many layers  . Nevertheless, glad you liked it.

In terms of the owl's wing, I feel like I followed the reference picture pretty closely. May I ask how you think this picture compares to the reference picture?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lDestiny In reply to Charlene-Art [2016-02-03 05:42:41 +0000 UTC]

Comparing to the reference:
You got the owl very good, both in details of the feathers and face, and the perspective.
The reference was taken from below looking up, while the girl in your picture is seen at regular eye level. This is why the owl seemed odd to me when I saw it the first time. The girl was not drawn from the same angle as the owl.

The angle in the reference is rather hard to get right (especially the face) because some parts will appear larger than others while the proportions should not look off (like how the shoulder and arm are closer, but remain in proportion. That's the hardest part about drawing in angles like the reference. In your piece, the lower arm (in the foreground) is a little to thin compared to the upper arm. But it can be forgiven, as it's only very slight.

Other than the perspective, you captured all the essentials very good: the owl, and anatomy of the girl overall are good.Keep practicing drawing your subjects in these types of angles from reference and you'll get it really quick. You got it with the owl perfectly, so I know you can capture it on people if you keep at it.

The thing I like most about this piece is actually the owl on her back. It really feels like he is on there, and I'm left wondering to myself, "Why is he...on there...?" and I like that. The background leaves me wanting so much though. It seems to be large tree with a cut out, but it's just not defined to me, and even if it was, that background wouldn't really tell me anything. It would seem too typical, and this woman is obviously not typical, (neither is her owl!). I feel her facial proportions could use work, but I know the artist will improve.

Good job!

Thanks! I have the glorious reference picture to thank for this

Yeah I should have put a lot more effort into the background. But thanks for your comments about it being typical... but if I were to pick something else would it distract from the owl and the woman?

I kind of made up the face which could be why it's a little off this time   Thank you for taking the time to critique!

tatlntael In reply to Charlene-Art [2016-01-25 07:14:36 +0000 UTC]

I don't think it would distract from the woman. It you feel it would, you could make the background lighter concerning colors forms, etc. that way the idea of what it really is would definitely be there, but the woman is the focus. Keep goin'!

Fair enough. I'm afraid I don't have the piece on me at the moment - I gave it away for an art auction. But I could get it back because it didn't actually get auctioned.

I'm totally in love with that owl : ) Not only because it's my favourite animal but also because you did amazing job on it's feathers. It looks very realistic. And I love how that owl is shielding the woman with it's wing, it's so cute. Even tho I'm not entirely sure if "cute" was your intention. I guess that the bird is representing the protective spirit of some kind? As for the things you could possibly improve - maybe try making the women's nose a bit longer and make her right cheekbone a little less defined. Other than that I really love it

Charlene-Art In reply to mimionthemoon [2016-02-03 06:43:13 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much. Cute was kind of the intention - the initial reference picture was just too precious! Had to capture some of that adorableness! I didn't really think of it as a spirit but that's a cool idea. Thanks for the tips about the face

Ooh nice. I've actually never heard of the principle of the guiding lines before. May I ask, does the original stock image conform to this guiding line rule?

Maybe I'm translating bad. There is always that sort of risk. ^_^'
Anyway, I'll try to continue.

Your photo:

About proportions
I love how it is written here. Open book by Andrew Loomis and start from 21 page.

Try to redraw these

About shadows
You should to take photo in good quality with a good light (where it is clear shadow emplacement), or a live model, and redraw it very carefully. (for example this img.mota.ru/upload/wallpapers/…
or this edu-equip.narod.ru/img/heads/c…
but not this www.maybelline.com.ru/~/media/… )
For convenience you can divide the head on the small flatness, how it is done here
