Description
This is an image of an old general store for the book illustration projectI did recently Kado: Lost Treasure of the Kadohadacho amzn.to/2NhwMN2 for sale at link, yes I’m trying to get a commission. But anyways this painting. Oh there’s something mesmerizing about planning out a piece like this. What would have been for sale in 1818 at a country general store? From the fabric prints, to the colors of glass, the tools and the wagon wheels. That cashier machine is original to the era, right down to the decorative designs. A pallet of beaver hides in the corner getting shipped back to the mainland. The little museum is apparently historical, dedicated to Andrew Jackson and had one of his battle jackets and one of his swords. I picked for this one a sword of his that is now on display at the hermitage. It had an odd chain guard which I found very interesting and a presumably ivory handle. This is obviously a parade sword, not a fighting one, but oh so beautiful. I’d have to say my favorite part of this piece though is the yarn hanging from the ceiling, freshly dyed with vegetable dyes, naturally.
King of purple hair is having a bad day , meanwhile. But when isn’t he? That’s what you get for washing your hair with beets!

You put so much detail into this, and I feel like I can almost smell this place, feel the slight dustiness in the air, hear the floorboards creak under, and the warmth streaming in from the windows.

People think eggs have to be refrigerated , do you think a chicken keeps her eggs in a frig ? No she sits on them and keeps them warm for weeks or until they hatch ! A fresh egg has a shelf life of about two months ! It was very common to see eggs setting on the counter in old country stores . A lesson for you ; How can you tell if an egg is bad ( without cracking it open ).. answer ; put it in a glass on water if it floats to the top throw it out . If it sinks to the bottom , it's good . Another trick ; How to tell hard boiled egg from raw egg . ( without cracking it ) .. spin it . A raw egg will not spin , a hard boiled egg will spin freely .
People in the old days had very little money , the old country store would often take your eggs for trade on other supplies . You might get as much as 5 or 10 cents for a dozens eggs . Makes me wonder how many people think milk comes from the store . lol

Wow great picture. But there's one thing bothering me. The color of the window frames just doesn't fit at all to the overall store. This light blue is very remarkable. Why did you choose this color?

Thank you! I picked that color blue, because of George Washington actually, he's got an entire room in Mount Vernon done up in that shade, so I knew it was a dye that they had. The milk-based paints that they used back in the colonial era are possibly even more durable than modern paints, and the colors are exceptionally vivid. I figured that the shopkeeper could spring for a little high-quality pigmented paint for a few pieces of interior trim.

thank you! That's nice to hear that small stores are still operating! I haven't seen a general store in California...ever...but they were here a long time ago, they were here once.

Good point about the supermarkets! what huge inventory they carry. I'm always shocked to see the cereal aisle, probably because I don't eat it, but aren't all those boxes from the same parent manufacturer, Kellogs? Enormous amount of real estate space for a single manufacturer, if you think about it.

This is lovely. Not to nitpick, but:
Scales. You missed out Scales. All items had to be weighed.
Cheese - would not be on floor! Under muslin cloth at back.
Meat, if uncured, would similarly be hung in a darker, cooler section. Larders were a thing.
Drawers usually went behind the counter?
The barrels are good - but overfull. Spillage is expensive. Perhaps a scoop for serving?
Out on the frontier - nails and hardware would be in high demand. Liquor also - expect brown jars - earthen wares dominated porcelain and glass!
Leather - cut to strips or as full hides - would be in some demand.
Medicines, tobacco and apocathery!
Overall....it looks a little bare: stores photos from later in the century show more crowded wares - empty space could always be used!

everything was referenced with period photographs from the very parish in question! maybe shopkeepers weren't as precise or as wealthy in this region.

I don't believe I've seen a paint of yours before of an interior space. This painting is as breathtaking as many of your landscapes. Space and lighting are very dramatic and the collection of things gives a lot to discover.
My son worked on an organic farm that had a farm store in the old barn. This painting has the same lighting as I remember from that store. If I could look out the window down rolling wooded hills to Hemingway lakeside cottage I'd be certain it was same store.

What an interesting place to work! And sounds like the view was amazing. I loved painting the light streaming in from the windows so brightly, indoor outdoor lighting is so dramatic!
