Finally I was able to use a black background seeing I wasn't working with a transparent cabochon or gemstone.Paua Shell wrapped in sterling silver wire.

Oh, that one is just gorgeous. I love the assymetrical-ness of it. For the clear stones, could you maybe stick a little teeny sticker on the back of them? Then the stone would show up, and the setting would still ahve the black background.
