Solar plates are kind of like film that turns into one of two different kinds of printing plates. Exposed under the sun (or tanning lights) with your image placed over them, washed in a solution, then rinsed in water, they turn into either a relief of the image or a negative relief of your image depending on how long they have been exposed.
They're great fun, and not too difficult to figure out.
