Description My second attempt at photo-compositing, using roughly 25 different pictures.

The head, shoulders, chest and abs are all pieces of a motorcycle, while the rest are a mix of industrial robots, metal textures, random hydraulics and tubes, a car, a scooter, and even a few pieces of helicopter!

The pose is very loosely based upon this image by

The name is a reference (if it isn't already obvious!) to the movie Short Circuit .

Comments would be appreciated!

In fairness, I never said it looks bad. I just think there needs to be more contrast with the character and the background. It's blue on blue with a side order of blue. The robot itself has a commanding enough design where the background actually seems unnecessary. I bet if you used a much more minimalist background (or none at all), the results might be pretty good. After all, the focus of the picture is Johnny5, not the background.

You make a fair point.. I think the background is maybe a tiny bit distracting. But without the '5' I never would have come up with the name for this piece (I mean, it doesn't really look like Johnny5, I just like making movie references xD ).

I think I need to learn to avoid backgrounds altogether, unless I plan on putting them into a proper setting like I did with Ursa Miner .
..or maybe find myself a proper colour palette to refer to so I can contrast things properly. As it is, I'm not very good at doing it by eye.

Keep the number '5'. I think it also adds to the whole "Johnny5" effect, but you might find that's all you need.

As for color palettes, it doesn't hurt to look at reference photos of the overall atmosphere you're going for and sample from there. Then you can manipulate the colors of the photos you're compositing to be whatever you want. The point is not to be afraid to draw inspiration for existing pieces.

It's not bad, but there's nearly no contrast between your robot and the background. It makes it Lind of hard to distinguish one from the other. Consider a value change or a color change for the background and I think this thing should be all right.

Oddly enough I did try that when I made it.. it didn't look good. As bad as you might think this looks the alternative was worse. The only other option would be to find a different background altogether.. but I quite like this one. The number '5' in the corner was a complete fluke, I rotated and overlaid the same image onto itself several times and it just appeared. I didn't want to get rid of it after that happened.

Anyway.. this was only my second ever attempt at photo-manipulation, I've learned a few things since then..
Thanks for the feedback though.

Hehe good eye.. it's from a Honda Evo 6
Actually a lot of the parts are from the same bike, including the 'abs' the 'ribs' and other parts of the head.

Ahaha, I knew it XD

I just recognize the shoulder at first...Taken from CBR1000, right?

I think so, I'm very bad at keeping a record of the pieces I've used.. my stock folder has well over a thousand images now so it's a bit tricky to search it.

I think you're right though.. looking at the rear of the CBR1000 , it does look like the shoulders. I think the chest and the shoulders were sourced from the same bike, but I can't seem to find one with that design on it again.

You really seem to know your motorcycles.. do you have any suggestions for ones I could use in my next piece? They're a great resource for parts, but I don't know enough about them to find the really interesting ones.

Nah, it's not like I have one here..I'm just fond of big bikes, streetfighter, custom, sportbikes, and sorta, so I know a bit
Do you have pictures of Bimota motorcycle? I think Bimota Tesi 2D can be a good source. It has complicated frames, bodyworks, wires and hydraulics. People would have difficulties recognizing which parts from which, hahaha
As for the robot head, I suggest you take a look at Benelli Tornado. It has bulky, insectlike frontlamp, maybe you'll be interested

Hehe you mean the little Johnny 5's from Short Circuit 2? Yeah he's a bit meaner looking than those... but remember, the big No. 5 had a laser mounted on his back.. so way more dangerous than this guy!
