Description
An attempt to create a webcam-based game in the style of Lemmings.INSTRUCTIONS:
- Use your arms, legs, or whatever you want to create ramps and platforms to guide the rabbits to their goal.
- The goal is a hole on the left hand side of the screen. An arrow marked 'EXIT' will periodically appear.
- The only way to change the rabbits direction is to let them hit the side of the play area.
- Rabbits will only move along areas of the webcam image highlighted in white. Try improving the lighting in your room to gain more edges.
Before I start, I just want to point out that this is an unfinished, experimental project. There are a LOT of things wrong with it, a few being:
- There's no preloader. Please be patient.
- There's no menu screen, and the game starts before the webcam is activated. Sorry.
- The scoring, timer, and lives indicators don't work properly, and as such the game never ends.
- There's only one level. Not being able to determine when a game is won, the game never ends, and I never got round to making another level.
- It's impossible to change a rabbits direction without hitting the side of the play area. I tried to change this, I really did. Six different solutions, and none of them worked.
- The motion is jerky. I made the game too graphic heavy, and as a result it can't be played properly at high quality. Switch it to medium quality for better results.
- The music doesn't work. I referenced external sound files and I'm not sure how to embed them yet. Currently the only sound effect is the 'splash' when a rabbit hits the water.
- The webcam interaction is clunky. I tried my best, but there was only so much I could do. I'm not 100% on how the edge-detection works, I based the interaction off this piece by Grant Skinner.
Naturally you need a webcam for this game to work. If you don't know which one it is, right click the game, go to the webcam settings, and go through the list until you find one that works. It is also best played against a plain background, as the camera will detect the edges of just about everything it sees.
There are two things you can do with the 'lemmings' basically.. either get them to the exit hole, or let them drown at the bottom. It's limited at the moment, but this game has potential to be much better.
With that out of the way, I'd like you to understand that this was my FIRST ever attempt at a Flash game. A bit over ambitious yeah, but I think I did pretty well all things considered. With a bit more time (and a better understanding of Flash) I think it could actually be a pretty fun game.
If anybody is interested in trying to fix this project up, send me a msg, as I don't think I have the necessary skills to do it all myself.

Hehe thanks.. yeah one of the reasons it never worked quite right was the amount of processing power it took.. I don't think Flash is really meant for this kind of work. Part of that is my poor choice of graphics, I reckon if I simplified them it would take less power to run.
Unfortunately this was my first attempt at making a game and I was in way over my head.. I wish I could go back and fix it up, but I never full understood what I was doing to begin with, so it would take a lot of time to re-learn it all..
Anyway, thank you for the comment

well start out with normal flash gaming, since its much simpler programming just come up with fun ideas for a game implement really fun gameplay heck i saw adult swim make a pretty kewl fighting game using flash but the fighting was simplistic to just punch, kick, and special move meter, but because the characters were drawn in such detail it looked like a good fighting game

Yeah I considered that, but I didn't want to do something ordinary.. this was my final project for my degree, and I got bonus points for originality, but didn't score too high cuz I didn't finish my work =/ Apparently good intentions and ambition don't count for much at uni..
I'm currently working on a much simpler beat-em-up style side-scroller like the Adult Swim one you mentioned.. setting my sights lower but still it's throwing up a whole slew of problems =S (like getting my character to walk diagonally and stay facing that direction when stopped).. and don't even get me started on art style.. I'm not an illustrator, so creating vector graphic characters is difficult for me.
Still, it's coming along.. hopefully I'll have it up for people to look at soon ^^

well say for example i created sprites would that work for you? like say i did a walking animation, punching animation, kick, jump etc.you know like street fighter HD, would that be easier for you to animate?
cause the thing is games have been around since most of us have been born and people my age still enjoy the old school 2D side scrolling beat'em up games so theres money in just making a really fun one
hell that newgrounds game "castle crashers" made it on Xbox live

Hmm thanks for the offer, but I'm not sure yet exactly what style I'll be doing the game in... though I have considered the possibility of an '8-bit mode', which would convert all the graphics to look more like a classic side-scroller. It's just an idea at the moment, need to see how the game goes before I start throwing random features into it xP
As for making money.. I'd just be happy if people liked my game enough to play it. If it turns out I'm a game designing genius (I wouldn't bet money on that tho hehe!), I'll make an awesome sequel and charge for it.
In the mean time, my day dreams of working in the game industry will have to do..

"isn't"?
I know it's unfinished and buggy as hell.. but it works as a proof of concept. I'd love to see someone who really knew what they were doing fix it up properly...

gee, don't sugar coat it or anything, give it to me straight.. =/
If you'd taken the time to read the instructions, you'd know what the issues with it were, and maybe also get your webcam to work (the default camera isn't always selected in the Flash settings, you have to set it yourself).
I also stated that I know it's slow, which is why I added the 'quality' buttons in the bottom right-hand corner so you could speed it up.
This is an unfinished game, and was an attempt at doing something way beyond my current skill level, so no, it's not perfect.
Your comment is extremely unhelpful and unappreciated.
