Description
I started this back in April but had not found the time to finish it off until now. A belated birthday and DA anniversary gift for , who's been with the community for just a little over 10 years now... which means I've also been around for a decade as well. Goodness we're old! XD=sonicolas is well known for his work on the DA sonic club, but I know him best for our projects in the Technoguild. He's always been our valiant 'Code Ninja', dropping in and solving many of our technical problems at a moment's notice. I learned a lot from him, and I don't think we could have accomplished as much without his help. So yeah, sorry for the delay but I hope you enjoy this little tribute. It's been great growing together with you. Hopefully we will find the time work together again. =]
Process
This was sculpted in zbrush using dynamesh and zremesher. Textures were made with polypaint and surface noise. Final render was done using a combination of the BPR pass method and a straight BPR filter pass. Background and post work was done in Photoshop using some photo reference from my recent Japan trip. Thanks to ~SteelEmissary for the feedback. =]
Oh also initial sculpting was done on my Samsung ATIV Pro! ;D

Wow, this caught me by surprise!
... And I am pretty speechless.
I'm evaluating the amount of work this must have taken, from character analysis to modeling, texturing and finally rendering...
You probably put more thought in this than I did when I actually did when designing and rendering him, ahha.
Gah, I can't help but feel that I am not worthy of such gift. You did an awesome job at recreating the character despite limited amount of work available.
That said, I really, really appreciate it. Really, I've been grinning for the whole hour I spend trying to write this comment and I feel that I need to improve and return back the favour.
Thank you Jason for the present, for reinvigorating my drive to draw and contribute again, and lastly - but certainly not least - for being a friend.
And hey, it seems that Elson and you are from the same neighborhood now. Man, I gotta catch up with what's happening. Starting to lose grasp of the ninja intel absorbtion way. XP
I'll catch you later then~

My pleasure Nick! This was one of those projects where it was just too fun to stop, so I just kept going with it! =] The design was simple enough to extrapolate from, yet challenging enough to keep me busy. Making the quills pointed that way for example took a bunch of tries to get right. XD
Glad it made your day. I felt like I owed you a lot for all your help these years, so this is one thing I thought I could do for you. =] Be sure to check out the online 3d model in case you haven't already. The flames and eye effects were really fun to add.
Ah and yes, Elson's moved to San Francisco to study at the Art Academy here for the next two years, so I'll be seeing him in person pretty often. XD

Yep I did see it. It was actually that 3D model that made me realize how much effort you spent on the piece.
The eye effect in particular revealed me how much you went to include little details that I never really share verbally when drawing the character X3

An awesome gift this is for Sonicolas, thanks for creating an engaging piece of work! Love the flames, the dynamic pose and the Japanese Feudal castle backdrop - ninja attack!
I didn't even know that Sonicolas has been also working and helping out with Technoguild all those year - another behind the scenes type?
Once again great job on this bro, you're getting better and faster with your Zbrush. *thumbs up*

Thanks Elson! Yes, he is a lot like me when it comes to working behind the scenes. He's probably more discreet than I am in some cases. There's a reason why I refer to him as a 'ninja' after all.
More sculpts and experiments to come for sure. Main priority at the moment is to straighten out a good workflow where I can churn these out at a steady pace. Once I feel comfortable I can then put it to the test by doing some commissions. =]

Ah I see.
Cool, looking forward to checking those out, and I'm lovin' the GO3D post! It makes an excellent reference point.
Also let me know if you're comin' tomorrow, I actually plan to go to Townsend sometime in the afternoon to drop off an assignment and also do some extra homework. *thumbs up*
