Wyngro Design Concept for thank you so much friend! I hope this concept is a helpful stepping stone to a design you love!
When it comes to character inspired (not converted/based-off) designs there's two things to keep in mind, silhouette design and colour/marking design. Sooo with the base requested to be kept similar I focused on the silhouette and threw in some minor marking things, so let's roll!

--- Current Design ---

Base: Keep Similar
Theme: Winter, Snow, Chongyun from Genshin Impact
Upgrades: Camo Markings | Seedrop Markings | Elegant Hair | Pupils | Coloured Sclera | Brow Changer | Cheek Fur | Fuzzy Folded Ears | Coloured Tongue | Teeth | Noble Neck Fluff | Fluffy Limbs | Body Fur | Back Hooves | Curled Fluff Tail | Thumbs | Gradient | Spot Markings? | Band Markings | Box Markings

Unlimited Clothing: Clothing is simplified and colour changed versions of the character. Still practical, loose for all the fur and thick material for the cold
- Hair is a super key point in looking like 2D characters so I pretty much transferred that over
- Other than that the fuzzy folded ears and the curled fluffy tail for some extra fluff were also chosen because the other themes made me think of snowy dogs like a husky so I'm rolling with it
- The character's feet/shoes looked like hooves to me, even put some box markings on there for the shine
- Fluffed up the limbs and body to buff out the silhouette so even when the baggy clothing isn't worn it has that look
- Placements of different darknesses vaguely imitates the clothing of the character as well
- Buuut to bring it back to the winter and snow themes, the snowdrop, camo and spot all come together with gradients to imitate the many different appearances of snow and rain turned sleet etc in the dark and heavy clouded skies so it still works with the dark base (rather than white on white snow fields in the day)
- Noble fluff is puffy and soft like a fresh pillow of snow and even vaguely looks like a hoodie hanging low
- The white camo to imitate the underbelly of like a fallow dear or something which carries around to the back with the fluffy tail. Also packed on top of the shoulders like some snow has built up
