Tenga hadn't known what to expect from someone who was perfectly fine leaving the choice of who they were going to live with entirely up to someone else. Maybe someone similar to him in stature and could handle anyone that tried to push them around? Or at least that's the image his mind had thought to settle on as he walked down the warmly lit halls of the Cosy Coatala. His new home. He hoped.
He was looking for room 7, according to the tag on the keys Demeter had given him. The inn itself didn't look very big from the outside so finding one room wasn't difficult.
In fact he was just coming upon the correct door now when fate decided it would make it even easier for him.

A rough CRASH came from inside the room.

Instinctively his body reacted before his mind even processed what he'd heard. The key in his claws was jammed into the keyhole and he frantically twisted the knob with his other hand. The crash hadn't been overly loud but it was a mix of wood on wood and the dull thud of a body impact. In other words, it sounded like someone had likely gotten hurt. Although as the key finally turned in the lock he had a brief thought about how it was odd that he hadn't heard any sounds of pain, at least none loud enough to get through the wood.

He slammed a shoulder into the door to hurry its opening and it swung inward easily.

With barely a second to take in the somewhat unexpected sight inside he was already breathing out a flat, "What."

Before him was a green quad lying stomach flat on the ground, her back legs awkwardly splayed and a pillow on her head beside a couch slightly out of place. All suggesting that she's fallen from it in a way that had made the furniture tilt one way and slam against the floorboards which explained the other half of the sound he'd heard.
Fine that was all whatever, but what was definitely out of the ordinary was what looked like a banner tangled between her claws, one side tied to a wall that separated the room, the other side lying limply on the ground beside her. String frayed as if it had snapped.
Stranger still, she had looked up at him the moment he'd entered with a big ole grin on her face. Friendly and sincere, if a little guilty as if being caught, well, falling off furniture.
There was a piece missing here, he couldn't quite work out what had happened. So he stared, a little in shock, a little in waiting for an explanation. Or for her to do anything really. But then she might be waiting on him too.

He wasn't sure how long he'd been staring with his mouth agape but Argo took it upon himself to poke him in the cheek from where he sat patiently on his shoulder, which was more than enough to snap him out of it.

Tenga cleared his throat, "Uhum, you okay?"

The green quad's smile didn't falter, "Never better! You?" She was still on the ground.

Tenga blinked, really unsure what to do in such a new situation. "Uh yeah, alright I guess I-" he shook his head, suddenly annoyed at the lack of direction this was taking he steeled his voice a little and righted his posture, "Am I in the right room?"

"Oh!" she laughing to herself and far quicker than necessary she scrambles up to her feet in an odd flailing of limbs and then thrust up the banner in her claws, "Sure are!"
It read, 'Welcome new roommate!'

Huh, so he was.

She saved him from trying to form another question without knowing what answer he wanted when she started a casual drawl of words falling out her mouth, "Sorry, I wanted to have this up before you got here but I think I put too much weight on one side of the couch. And then the string snapped and well you know the rest." 'No big deal' is what the tone said. He hoped that meant she really wasn't hurt and not because she'd hit her head or something.

"That wasn't really necessary," he shifted uncomfortably on his feet. He'd hoped whoever he'd found in his new place would be rather passive, leave him to his business and he'd leave them to theirs. So far, putting up a banner to try welcome someone you had no clue about seemed a little too excited, a little too eager to get involved. Maybe it was a one time thing? He winced inwardly as the happy way she bounced over to the wall to try retie the loose end of the banner said otherwise.

"There," she sat back to admire her work, "Might as well not let it go to waste, you know?"

Tenga raised an eyebrow, "Sure. Look this isn't going to be a consistent thing is it?" His tone was gentle though which was a change, but he saw no reason to crush the spirit of another for no reason. That was just heartless.

She turned and gave him a bewildered look, "I love a good banner as much as the next gro but it's not that good. I'll probably take it down tomorrow don't worry."

"I wasn't talking about the- oh never mind," he sighed, resigned. He supposes that response is better than her saying the opposite.

"So what's your name roomie?" she walked up to him, although he noted the bounce was still evident in her step.

"Tenga," he gestured to his growing Runeboo on his shoulder, "And this is Argo."

Her eyes flitted between the two, a smile growing as she did. Or rather the smile already present grew wider. "I didn't even see the little guy he blended in with your colour so well. Hey there little dude," she put up a claw to rub under Argo's chin and he squeed happily at the attention.
Tenga felt his shoulders sag under released tension. He hadn't realised he was even tensing at all.
Maybe this wouldn't be too bad, at least she liked Runeboos.

"I have a Runeboo too," she said, stepping back to look down a hallway he couldn't quite see with the door in the way. "This is Canter."
She paused as if something was meant to happen. He felt Argo shuffle on his shoulder but that was it.

The green quad sagged her posture over dramatically before walking a few steps in so her top half was out of view. "Aw come on girl it's okay, they won't bite."
She returned holding an orange and green Runeboo who was shaking slightly in her one claw grasp.
As if sensing his question she looked up from cooing quietly to the poor creature and met his eyes with the first bit of seriousness he'd seen from her, "I found her in the rubble after the attack last year, half scared to death. She's still a little shaky around anything bigger than her." She put the boo on the ground again where she quickly curled around the quad's foot.

Tenga felt something settle deep in his chest, but he decided to ignore it when it started to ache.

"Well," he started, a little hopeful, "Good thing Argo is still growing." He took his little friend off his shoulder and put him down by the orange boo- Canter.
Knowing how good Argo was at helping someone scared stiff of getting close to anyone, Tenga smiled.
And it didn't waver when he directed it towards his new roommate who was watching the two sniff each other with that never ending smile of her own.

"Guess that settles it," he declared and thrust out a hand, "Uh..."

Her head whipped up to face him again and her smile grew to show off her teeth once more.

His new roommate thrust out a hand to grasp his with surprising strength and shook it gleefully before filling the blank for him.

"Prairie."

Ayy that roommate finally revealed huh?
A few people guessed it would be Russet and while that would be hilarious for the future I think I need to let it be known that had it been bird boy who Tenga walked in on he'd straight up rather live homeless than with him so as it stands now that wouldn't work. Just as it stands now.

But Prairie! No one guessed it would be her, even if I did try some subtle foreshadowing here and there ;D
I'd giggle at that poll I did about who's plot to work on because Prairie came second last and yet her's was tied with Tenga who came first. But there were the same plot in the end.
It just means you get her point of view as to how she got here later. Woo woo I've had these two coming together for roommate shenanigans since, well since I made Tenga actually. What a massive relief to finally get here.
