My first tutorial!Please bear with me, I have a lot to say to offer advice, but I always forget to photograph my progress. Hahaha, also explaining things on paper is MUCH much more difficult than just showing you in person.
As a note, this isn't my 'normal' technique. But I thought it would be fun to throw together, as I'm learning how to do more things with the supplies I have.
(finished picture will be posted soon, was a weird "sparkle" badge I had to do @_@)

Maybe you should try shading first, and then put the pure colours.
I usually do that, it gives a different effect and usually makes the coloring less thick o:
