The zebra mongoose or mungo (Mungo's mungo) is a mongoose native to the African savanna
The animal owes its name to the clear striped drawing on the back

The zebra mongoose is a sturdy mongoose with a large head, small ears, short, muscular legs and a long tail, almost as long as the rest of the body
Animals in wetter areas are larger and darker than animals in drier areas
The abdomen is higher and rounder than the chest
The rough coat is grey-brown in color
Dark brown to black vertical stripes run over the back and abdomen
The limbs are darker in color (mainly on the lower part), as is the muzzle
The underside is much lighter in color
There are long claws on the legs, with which the animal can dig in the soil
The tail is broad at the base, and tapers to a thin, black tail tip
