Description
FLCL's Canti on a garbage throneAnother try at digital painting. I'm still a bit slow but i'm getting the hang of it >_>;
This piece is actually inspired by this sketch I drew a half a year ago. At the time I had a bad case of art block, and only posted it on a whim.
Surprisingly people liked it. And through that shocking relevation, it gave me enough confidence to end my art block. True Story.
drawn in Photoshop CS5

Lol, it's at least ten years old. I feel old thinking that Gundam Wing, Eva and all those shows are fifteen years old. /leans on cane
FLCL was toats gone for a while, though D: Yay working in a comic book shop; people were asking for it a lot XD

Well, I hope that they made the new episodes cheaper at least. I still remember they where selling them for $25 for 2 episodes. D':
I didn't know you worked at a comic book shop! That's a horibly tempting place to work at xP

I think it is on one disc instead of three. Back in the day, I got the box set, which was way better value (especially now, hurrdurr lol). It was part of my pay for working a convention with Anime Pavilion XD
Also, yeah, been there for like six months. I will be sad to quit to go down to SCAD but it is probably best. A job like that, I'd work there forever. Especially since I am one of the people in charge of the manga section.

Dude, this is awesome. Your digipainting ROCKS. I love the details in this and the colorsss. The colors are so awesome. And the background! Gah. THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULD PAINT MORE. BECAUSE YOU ARE GOOD AT IT. I mean, shit. I would commission you for things if I thought you'd take less than a year to finish them. x: Just sayin'.

SLOW AND STEADY WINS THE RACE!!! SLOOOOW AND STEEEAAAADY~~~Dx
Yeah but I know what your saying. I'm thinking I should try more speed painting rather then finished work if I want to reach that professional level. Honestly, I'm just happy I've been finishing large compositions then just floating character bodies that I always do :D

Yes, well. Slow and steady isn't how you feed yourself. (Just sayin'.)
I think speedpainting might help you get in the habit of actually doing it more, but it's good to do more finished work since you can do a lot more with a finished piece. Either way, I would love to see more stuff from you on a regular basis. It's lame because you are SO TALENTED but it's so damn rare I get to SEE anything that you do. :\ If I threw money at you, would you be able to paint me things in less than a year? (Seriously.)

D': The true sad facts.
Right now I feel like i'm doing a lot of experimental things that I haven't done before. And it's unfortunate that no matter what techniques i've been using, I want to try something else. It's like i'm searching to find this technique that i'm most comfortable before I decide to manipulate it commercially :/ It's also the main reason why i'm skeptical about putting commissions up. My process changes so much, I wouldn't know how long something would actually take.
It's kind of ironic that it takes so long for me to draw at home yet lately i'm been drawing over 50 commissions at each con ._.;

Kiriska In reply to chewibunny [2011-01-18 03:23:10 +0000 UTC]
Haha, well, experimenting is good! I have always been awful about experimenting even though I know I desperately need to. I am very good at doing the same thing over and over again. But well. I suppose you'll have plenty of time to figure what the hell you wanna do after you graduate. >_> As for commissions at cons -- you have pressure. Pressure is good. And also, you advertise yourself doing very quick sketch things, so I don't think you're as hard on yourself if they're kinda wonky since they're supposed to be that way. Whereas for things on your own time, you have FOREVER to nitpick it.

chewibunny In reply to Kiriska [2011-01-18 03:46:17 +0000 UTC]
Lol We have opposite situations. Hell I think it's awesome that you don't experiment. It tells me that you already established a style your most comfortable working with. And overall because of that, you have the idealized artist workmen's method. You get things done > In your own style > Fast ._.
GAWD THIS IS TRUE. Pressure is a good motivator but there is surprisingly no stress because of the instantaneousness customer feedback. I have no remorse drawing shitty at cons. In fact, I thrive off of it! There's no greater feeling being genuinely praised for artwork you spent hardly any time on! ._. (wow that sounds jerkish)

Ehh, idk. What I do is comfortable, but it is not GOOD ENOUGH. I should experiment because I'm not capable of drawing everything I want to draw, but instead of trying to get better, I don't draw it at all because I don't want to look at how crappy it will turn out. I slip into the comfortable because it's easy.
Pressure is an excellent motivator, yes. And it IS awesome to some extent to be praised so easily for what you consider crap because then by that standard, what you consider good must be AMAZING! And it just makes you feel better about yourself. I kind of think you should try offering more complex pieces at cons just to see how you would handle them. :>

chewibunny In reply to Kiriska [2011-01-19 08:35:02 +0000 UTC]
DON'T DRAW ENOUGH?!? I call bullshit! Your the one I see always drawing free sketches and even doing those themed challenges! And in doing so you've been getting better and better D: But seriously if your unhappy with what you have try replicating someone else's techniques/ style as practice (rather then fanarting them in your comfortable style). Then merge your favorite results into your own style :D
Arg, but it's overall not worth it if my standards are too high and time consuming D'''': Naw, I've tried drawing more complex things on larger paper before at cons by request. I charge more, looks better, but I seriously get more money doing the alternative where time is concerned.

Ugh, you kiddddding me. I am so awful at drawing on a regular basis, especially now that I no longer have boring lecture classes to doodle through (those were the best). I hate looking at people that shit out like five billion amazing things a day and have sketchdump files that are full of awesome and interaction and character expressions and COLOR and arghadgshdgshadghsa so inadequate. The date gaps in my sketchbook since graduation are terrible. I've gone a month without cracking that thing open. The thing is just doing. I can't get motivated to experiment or do anything for myself because it doesn't matter and I'm just going to suck forever. >___> orz
And I guess. Cons are a time crunch for sure and if doling out 50 dumb sketches is more profitable than 5 very nice pieces, then whatever, I guess. (Or charge x10 the amount!) Try to take more off-con commissions and set yourself deadlines and convince yourself that you ABSOLUTELY CAN'T MISS THEM.
