Description
Bike pic for RISD application. It's not really a creative piece, but I still worked really hard on it and don't want people copying it for their college applications. I'm sure you all can come up with much more interesting things than this anyway.
Random story: The car skidded on the way to class and sent my dinner (dumplings) flying everywhere/landing on my drawing. The tree is actually there because the branches help break up the dark spots from the grease stains.
Edit: I got accepted.

This is pretty awesome! Do they want you to draw if from life or can we take a photo and draw it off that? Congrats on being accepted!

Great technique! These bike drawings for RISD are a bitch, they're part of my reason for not applying there. Did you get in?

aaaargh, RISD = sooo much work...I've never been so busy with quite so many projects in my entire life~! I've been pulling a lot of all-nighters just trying to finish all the work...D: (ie. 2D design hw for this week = 50 create/destroy logo designs, 15 themed sketches, 20 sets/sequence grid sketchy things....I wonder if my teacher is aware that we have more classes than just 2D design....? ;___; )

oh my god... how do you find time for DA? and aren't you taking mostly foundation courses being this your freshman year?

Chibi-Cloud In reply to chrismakesmusic [2007-09-27 03:34:46 +0000 UTC]
I never update anymore. xD Foundations year = freshman boot camp...D:
I get more hw in my 2D design class than the rest of my classes combined. T___T My teacher used to teach graduate graphic design (this is his first time teacher foundation). I think he forgot that, unlike graduates who focus on a single major, freshman are required to take a bunch of other studio classes as well. We can't focus ALL of our time of 2D design the way that graduate students can...
I heard from a bunch of people that my section (section 2) has the heaviest workload of the 30 some sections (sections = our little "family" for the first semester, we have all of our studio classes together). D'= 3D design, drawing, english, and art history are time consuming....but at least they give us a manageable workload. The 2D design assignments my section has been getting is enough to keep us busy for an entire week....even if that was the only class we focused on.
In spite of the workload, I'm definitely enjoying myself here. Now I finally understand what the upperclassmen mean when they say they "love and hate RISD at the same time." xD

sorry to barge in the convo!
i just wanted to ask about how RISD life is going for you right now. I've heard that foundation year= boot camp, but how are the other aspects? Like teachers, dorms, classes, and food?
I have RISD as my top choice, so i'm very interested in knowing more about it!:> Thank you.

kdsljfjairsfnao OMG sorry for taking forever to respond. I haven't been on DA in forever. This is probably not very helpful by now, but I'm going to respond anyway. Just...because...
Teachers are generally very nice, very understanding, and are awesome friends both in and out of studio. They expect only the best of their students and can be kind of blunt sometimes in their crits (it's important to learn not to take crits personally. I know EVERYONE says they can take harsh crits, but 80% of the time, they get angry and take them as personal attacks anyway). The general attitude of most people here is 1) harsh, but constructive criticism = good 2) suger-coating everything = nice, but a waste of time.
The first half of class (approx. 4 hours) is usually dedicated to crits, though there are a couple teachers who do this at the end of the day. Doesn't really matter when they do it because the students are always falling asleep from 1) staying up all-night to work on projects and/or 2) a long, tiring day of studio. You become very close, almost like family with your section over the course of the semester. People are very supportive and very helpful. People often ask if it's a very competitive environment. I personally don't feel like it is. The only competition is really with yourself to constantly improve and be better than your last project. I don't think people would be willing to stay up all night with their friends and studio-mates to help them with projects if they were competing with them.
I personally think the food at RISD is pretty good. Some people complain, but I think they're just ungrateful for the many options (vegan friendly too) RISD gives us. Seriously, if you ever get the chance...visit other colleges and check out their cafeterias. I doubt they offer as much diversity as RISD does. There are 2 main cafeterias on campus--the Met and the Portfolio--and several smaller shops scattered around the campus--The Jolly Roger (amazing sandwiches), Carr Haus, Watermark Cafe, and Geoff's sandwiches (?). The portfolio has REALLY good food (occasionally ), but they don't have very many options and it gets kind of repetitive if you eat there too often. As a freshman, most of your meals are probably going to be at the Met just because you live so close to it.
Let me know if you have any more questions that you haven't already resolved by now. xD;; I can run around campus and take pictures of things for you too, if you like. Sorry for taking so long to respond....

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply! That was very helpful.
Yay for constructive criticism. I'm tired of the high school art teachers being so lax and chillax about all of our art. We learn nothing and it is basically just philosophical and conceptual exploration for my school's art classes. I would like to know if RISD leans too much towards "finding oneself" and that kind of idealistic teachings? I'm not againest conceptual/abstract art but I think there needs to be firm foundation first.
I was also wondering what your stats were when you applied? And, if possible, can I see your portfolio just so I can have a basic idea of what RISD is looking for in an applicant? That would be much appreciated since I couldn't find any online or at my school.:/
Thanks again!

Chibi-Cloud In reply to purplehamster101 [2009-07-02 20:04:20 +0000 UTC]
Nah, I don't think RISD is really like that. It IS very conceptual, but not really in such a philosophical, "finding yourself" kind of way. (good) Abstract art isn't as easy as it looks... ; A ;
My stats? Like grades? You honestly don't need very good grades to apply to RISD. I had a 3.5 GPA and 2140 on the SATs. I know people with way lower scores who still got in. My essay was a load of crap (literally getting on my knees and begging to get accepted xD). It all depends on your portfolio.
If I find them, I might post them... The reason I haven't yet is because I don't want people copying my stuff for their college applications (which has happened on more than one occasion D: ). I might...email it to you or something. I dunno.

Oh that's good.
How easy would you say it is to take classes over at Brown and international transfers? (Not necessarily just pertaining to you, but your classmates as well.)
And about the faculties, are they all working artists? Are they hands on/helpful?
If you could email it to me that'd be great. I just want a general idea of what level of technique and personality is needed for a winning portfolio. If you're worried about me copying your art, you can make them really small/pixilated so I just have an idea of what RISD looking for.
Thanks for answering my questions, I understand RISD is very demanding and time-consuming, but you survived boot camp!
