Description Oh hey, I actually went and added bones to this guy too! By the way, this rig job is awful, omg. I'm not even sure why I'm posting it. Figured you guys would want to see what I worked on during my massively long absence, though.

I'm highly suspecting that you are one of the producers of Pokex 3D Pro because your art is so darn close to the original model.

It's not that bad. It needs though more smoothed out weight painting around the joints like for example the ankle or the elbow. Under Blender you can use the smooth brush two smear out the weight painting (other 3D apps should have something similar I guess). You might have to add some more edge loops around the joints area for better deformation. You need at least 3 edge loops around an ankle or elbow joint to get a useful result even with SubSurf modifiers.

Render could use some glossiness (not much).

Yeah, I was just frustrated and didn't want to work on it anymore. Someday I'll go back in and more carefully adjust the weights by hand, since it's extremely rough here (I had just got done spending a week carefully weighting my Lucario model.) He actually is rather high poly, so there are plenty of edge loops on the joints.

In any case, I think I'll just start skinning him over again because I discovered a part of his foot has like five vertices on top of each other and I'm not sure how to fix it otherwise. x.X

Thanks for the input!

In Blender you can select all vertices and use "Remove Doubles" and the problem is gone. High polygon models you should anyways not weight-paint. That's a waste of work time and error prone. Better create a cage-mesh fitting the model, weight paint the cage-mesh and "Mesh Deform" the high polygon mesh by the cage-mesh. This gives the best results in the least work time.

For this guy I'm using 3Ds max--I'm pretty sure there's an equivalent function, I had just forgotten to do it after making some last-minute tweaks to the model. x.X And...actually...I should have specified--this model is about ~6000 polygons but this particular render has a smoother on the model to hide the atrocious skinning. Again, I definitely plan to go back and improve it. I've never heard of "Mesh Deform" so I'd be interested to find out if there's a Max equivalent (since hand-weighting Lucario took weeks of trial and error, even though he's <3500 poly.)

6k is actually not much. A high quality game model can be 10k-15k or more all weight painted. What goes for Mesh Deform it's a modifier in Blender which can be attached to meshes. It uses a cage mesh of low resolution as a deformation mesh. There's a different name for this technique I can't remember. Old stuff though I'm pretty sure 3DS has it somewhere too. The trick here is that you weight paint only a low polygon mesh which in turn deforms then any arbitrary high polygon mesh.

u should do a 3d model like u did on Lucario, that was awesome

Hey, I love his model, but his rig job is awful. xD If I tried to animate him right now, his body parts would be like, folding into themselves.

Looks really nice ^^

Except that left leg is twisting a bit weird, but I bet you noticed that already ;^^

Chibi-Pika In reply to SassyTheDragongirl [2012-05-22 03:04:31 +0000 UTC]

Yep, that's part of the bad rig job. Bending the bones into the pose caused the model to deform a bit, particularly in trouble areas like the hip/legs. I just need to spend a bit more time fixing him up.

I wouldn't mind, although it would probably look better with a transparent background, and I don't have a copy of this with no bg on hand.
