Description
EDIT 25 March 2016... finally updated this thing again... I wonder though... while it is fun to see them all next to each other... perhaps it would be better to make a vertical list, where I can put the little "profile" of every style next to the drawing.
BTW: Since I've been going through some old drawings lately I've actually been using this chart to help me date some of my works a bit.
About the idea
I’m not sure any more how I got the idea, maybe I got it when I was looking through my old drawings, or when I was looking at my Improvement Chart
Anyway, the idea was to draw the same girl in the same pose in the different styles I had through time.
So even though she seems older and younger, let’s say the girl I have drawn is supposed to be 14 years old in every style.
Starting from my first manga drawings till now.
So here are the things I have focused on:
Anatomy: how did I draw faces, hair, etc. ( I later realised I would have been even more fun if I had made full body drawings.
Shading: did I use shadows, how did those shadows look, did I use highlights, etc.
Something I didn’t focus on is quality. So offcourse my colouring wasn’t as smooth on my 12th as you see it here. But I wanted to focus on style, which is ( for me atleast ) a lot about how you choose to draw something, the quality of my colouring wasn’t a choise, I always did the best I could do at that time.
About this drawing
To keep things easy I have the different styles numbers. I will try to stay systematic, so this discirption won’t become just an amzing amount of text to read, but will stay organized.
1.
Age: 12 ( 2002 - 2003 )
Lineart: done in pencil
Colouring: usually felt-pens.
My first manga drawing looked like this. I started drawing this “drawing style from japan” after first watching Cardcaptor Sakura, and later SailorMoon which where always on TV in the morning back then.
I started to learn to draw manga by printing some SailorMoon images and coping features from those images. ( Mind you I didn’t literally copy them ) Here you can see that paper. www.freewebs.com/claudiaverhoe… ( I still have it
2.
Age: 12 ( 2002 - 2003 )
Lineart: done in pencil ( sometimes fineliner)
Colouring: usually felt-pens.
A few weeks or maybe months after I started drawing “That drawing style from japan” I saw an educational program for kids on tv ( for the dutch people “Klokhuis” ) that had has subject “Manga” so from that day one, I didn’t draw “That japanese drawing style” anymore, I drew manga. Knowing how the drawing style is called gave me the afdvance of being able to search for tutorials. Sadly I couldn’t read English back then, and there weren’t that many drawing books on it yet, so I had to use this dutch website www.geocities.com/teken_manga/… , made by some students, to learn how to draw manga.
3.
Age: 13 – 15 (2003 - 2006)
Lineart: Fineliner
Colouring: pencils
I found someone on some kind of kids website that also drew manga, and asked her for tips. She recommended on of the Christopher Hart books, back then an amazing book to me. ( These days I think it doesn’t even look that much like manga )
It did teach me how to use shadows, and I also started using highlights one the hair. Back then I also finally saw that the weird black thing I drew in the middle of the eye, always just connecting it with the white dots, was actually the pupil and supposed to be round.
I also got the translated versions of some “How to draw Manga” later, which also really helped me.
4.
Age: 16 (2006 - 2007)
Lineart: Fineliner
Colouring: pencils
No major changes that I can mention, mostly small things.
Example:
5.
Age: 17 (2007 - 2008)
Lineart: Photoshop
Colouring: fabercastell pencils
I got in touch with deviantart resulting in starting to learn Photoshop, using highlight and shadows even better, and getting fabercastell pencils.
Back then I used Photoshop to trace the line-art to get smooth pressure simulating line-art. I didn’t use this method for long because of the time consuming tracing.
The colouring of the hair is inspired by among others: SrtaAiko
6.
Age: 18 (2008 - 2009 )
Lineart: printed very light and traced with colouring pencils
Colouring: fabercastell pencils
I’m getting more realistic, drawing more realistic noses, and the eyes in a more realistic shape. I don’t use black line-art anymore, but colouring pencil line-art instead. I also try to use more crontast and darker shadows.
7.
Age: 25 ( 2015 - 2016 )
Line-art: printed very light and traced with colouring pencils ( in digital work sometimes lineless other times with line-art )
Colouring: fabercastell pencils ( most of the time days these Photoshop though )
I admit this may not be a perfect update since it has been 2 years since I've worked with colouring pencils and I'm kinda rusty... My style has gotten a lot more realistic I guess... or atleast compared with how it used to be... but next to realism I hope to also work on making faces less "pretty" and more expressive and stuff.
Honestly I should have submitted this thing earlier, the last one actually already isn’t up to date anymore, I started using only one “Light” in the eyes instead of 3, I’m trying to get a little more realistic… or maybe just a little less manga. I still really like it, but I’m getting fed up with the stereotype stuff.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Media: (mechanical) pencils, fabercastell pencils, MS paint for the numbers, Photoshop CS and crappy basic image-edit-program to fix contrast and other stuff the scanner ruined.

This is really cool!! I have one drawing that I like to redraw every once in a while. It's always cool to see improvement!!! It's encouraging.
You were always very talented! Seriously, all of these are really good. It's cool to see you improve and also to see your style change.
I totally understand the trying to move away from manga thing. I keep telling myself I want a more....idk, cartoon inspired style?? But it all just ends up looking anime LOL idk why I feel so cringe when people call my style anime. Maybe it just makes me feel like a weeb LOL

It sure is, I love to redraw some art from time to time too.
Thank you
This isn't a completely "honest" redraw BTW though... I didn't start it when I was 12... I made the first version ( 1 to 6 ) in 2009 so around my 19th/20th.
I've no idea what to call my style anymore... but I keep posting a lot of my art under "manga and anime" her at deviantart... out of habit perhaps...

oh dear, I see an improvement but between 5 and 6 there is something wrong.
The eyes on 6 are not good, I am sorry but I don't like them what so ever.
Here is a tip:
You've don a really good job on number six with the shading, to make it better I think you should use
the eyes from no. 5 and shade them a little more on number six.
I sure that'll look better.
You don't have to follow me, but thats just my opinion.

Thank you very much for the comment and the tip.
This is kind of an old artwork though ( it’s 4 years old. )
So I should really update this, as soon as I have time.
The eyes I draw look different from when I drew them at “6”, if you would like, you can perhaps take a look and tell me what you think

Oh thank you for taking interest in my tips.
I myself have problems with drawing human characters sometimes,
But I've got very good observation skills and I see things others don't.
Once somebody points it out, everybody understands and see's it too.
I gotta say you did nice on the digital, but here is a few things to make it look even better:
Look at the face, and now at the hair.
The face is nice and smooth but the hair is also beautiful; so beautiful it looks better than the face.
Why? here is the answer!
The hair has way mush more detail then the face. Look again.
See it? The picture is not balanced though its very well done!
How to fix it?
You should either upgrade the face with more detail, or lower the quality on the hair (also on eye lashes)
Maybe give it a little smudge? c:
The traditional
I love it ! SO SO much!
What I'd change? I'd do the lips a little smoother, more innocent looking.
But I respect your style and I love the way you did the lips! (I just gave you a suggestion of what I would draw like)
Another little tip; you should add some shadows in necessary places like on the girls dress there's a bow, you should add shading under it. Get what I mean?
Anyways hope I help and sorry for my super-long speech.
Those are my words of wisdom

Oh off course, opportunities to get a critique like this are fairly rare.
I agree with you on the notes on the face in my digital work, I must say this one is different from my usual digital work, since I looked for something in my gallery that shows of her eyes the best.
But her face could absolutely use some detail.
The lips are something I have to work on a little, I feel like they usually come out a little too thick.
Your also right about some of the shadows, I still have trouble with casting shadows… a shadow under the bow, is fairly easy, but for example the girl on the left is holding a sceptre in front of her, so that should technically cast a shadow too, but I’m always afraid I’ll screw those up.
Anyway, thank you very much for taking the time to look at my art and give such a long and thought out comment

I might hop around and look at your art sometimes, see how you improve.
I like your lips, they show YOUR style and look like you really know what you're doing!
Just for an example I have got a link of artwork with the innocent type of lips I was talking about : saccstry.deviantart.com/art/Pr…
Other artwork also has these type of lips from this artist, you can have a look. (Careful, most artwork contain violence and gore, just warning)
Sorry I don't want to start a looooong comment again so her is my last thing to do:
*clicks on your page, then clicks on +Watch button*
There! That should do

First of all, I'm sorry it took me so long to reply, I have been a bit busy the last few days
I'm glad you like the lips i draw too. ( They do need more practise though, i think they might be looking a bit to thick sometimes... )
Those are actually very pretty lips indeed, I should give it a try drawing lips like that.
I have seen the artist's work before, it's indeed on the gory side, I remember the artist used to have a a good hair-tutorial, although it was hard to look at because of the gore.
Anyway, Thank you very much for watching me

Really, then I would like to see your work, you make me curious.
I don't think I'm mistaken though, these aren't rules of how people draw at what age, this deviation shows how I drew at those ages.

the first one reminds me of mew mew power (mainly the eyes) then the next few remind me of sailor moon/other animes, and the last two make me think "oh yeah thats her own style" and remind me of no one else cept you very well done getting your own look it's not easy

Chibi-Sugar In reply to Shadowhardt [2009-06-28 11:42:39 +0000 UTC]
I'm really glad you can see I'm getting my own style, I guess that's probably one of the biggest compliments someone who draws manga-like can get, considering I usually have to deal with the whole "manga/anime is all the same" stuff, which just simply denies that I would have my own style.
So yeah, I'm really happy to hear this

3, 5 and 6 are my favourites of them.
Interesting idea to draw the same girl in different styles you have had through times. Your styles are little bit differents in different ages, but there can still see that it is the same girl.
(but I understood you made those every drawings now at this age you're now?)
But your style is development much!

I made them all the last months indeed.
It's quite a lot of fun to compare art from the part with the present in my opinion
I'm glad to hear that my style is development

It is indeed.
I sometimes also use this chart at school for those "When are you gonna stop drawing manga" people, so I can show them that if this development goes on, my style probably hardly will be manga anymore in 5 to 10 years.

Oh my,you've got to be kidding me. D8
I'm wondering if they really belong there. XP
Well, what's worse. My drawing teacher on the Media-education (from which I have left by now) didn't even know what manga WAS. And he's an artist himself. I mean,if you're an artist, you MUST have heard of manga sometime. He refered to my drawings as 'cartoons'...There's a big difference between cartoons and anime/manga...OMG...That made me furious. D8<

Personally I'm not that surprised any more if people above 30 don't know anime/manga, although it's kinda bad an artist doesn't know indeed.

Because the ancient manga were really like paintings, since they were like, painted with a brush and all. Well,I never liked that teacher anyway,so screw him. XD
