yep.
i really hate it when someone(myself,my friends, anyone really) works EXTREMELY hard on their character, tries their best to keep the character original, and some close-minded person who thinks that having one sue-ish quality makes the character a mary sue,and calls them that, disregarding everything else about the character.
i have made a couple of off-the-top-of-my-head/in-five-minutes characters, but they never manage to get their own story,or even last more than a month without any major revamping.the only character i can think of that i actually made like that and hasn't changed much is a villain i made,OSC,who i stuck to pretty simplistic stuff for.he's still more complicated than when he started out,but he's literally the one i've worked least on...and that's the only time i made that work

I don't really spend 'months' creating my oc's but I do think about them carefully before I write them in a story ^^ I'm much more careful how I create them and even take the mary sue litmus test to test them if they're a mary sue or gary stu and if it says they are, I try to fix them. Nice stamp by the way ^^

I can come up with an idea for an OC in five minutes, but then it takes me forever to give them a decent back story and all that happy stuff. But when it comes to gender and looks I can do it pretty fast.

I've been developing my oldest character since I was in Sixth grade/eleven years old. She's grown up a lot and changed a lot with me. For any budding author, I suggest mapping out all of your characters and writing them profiles. Main, secondary, background, ect. It helps a lot. ^^

I do the same thing kind of...
Like my OCs usually have alright names[Jeffery[link] , Kokoro [link] , Jackie[link] [link] [Used to be named Jack], Damion[though I have not pictures of him posted yet]]
I've been developing Jack[ie] for almost 6 or 8 years!! I've had her as Jack for the longest time then like 2 years ago she turned into Jackie~
Kokoro was a recently created character, as well as Jeffery and Damion.... but I love them as well.
I'm sure characters I adopt aren't able to be considered "OCs" because I don't create the looks, but I created their names and personalities!!

Anyone who still creates new OCs, but also has ones they've been developing for over 6 years deserves a round of applause!
New and old, you have the best of both worlds, and not just a pile of quick Mary Sues and Gary Stus!

Aww, thanks a bunch!! ^_^
That means a lot to me!! I've been working hard on all my OCs and they are like family to me~
I love them so much, I wouldn't give them up for a thousand dollars... Heheh~ I don't eventry to keep them from being a Marysue or Gary stu... I just draw and create what comes to me naturally... Now THIS:
[link]
Is a mary sue!! I came up with her for fun heheheh

ToddNTheShiningSword In reply to LenaUchiha8 [2012-11-14 19:55:26 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, a thousand dollars is cheap. For buying OCs, the cost should be at least five figures, not three (or just barely four one dollar more)
I've only got three OCs right now, and I've been working on all of them for years, off and on. That's part of why I think well developed OCs are so special. I put so much into mine you wouldn't believe... Or would you?

LenaUchiha8 In reply to ToddNTheShiningSword [2012-11-14 20:01:17 +0000 UTC]
I've got SO many OCs, I would believe.. I put so much thought into the name, I look up names and say it while looking at the character to see which one fits her face and personality the most. I create the looks, and the personality by the looks, then the name by both.
Unless I have a name that I want to make a character with then I have the name, make the personality, then the looks. I spend a lot of time too.

Starting with the looks is an interesting way to go, because I think more people do personality first and find a look for the personality or role to play.
I like to create names that that are separate from the character's looks or personality. After all, people get their names as babies, so if their name were based on their looks or personality, then it's based on how they looked or acted as a baby! Hmm... that got me thinking of a joke I might use in a comic one day... Give a character a name that totally doesn't fit their personality, but then draw a picture of what they looked like as a baby and make them totally look like that then! So maybe they could be having a "Mom why did you name me this?" conversation, and that could bring that up! lol. I make comics that are supposed to be funny. Action comedy. So I'm always thinking everywhere for new jokes, hehe. I try to draw things for my characters from every possible place. Even conversations with people on the internet!

The trick is to come up with their flaws before their abilities. : 3
Of course... I only spend like five seconds on ocs...
Then I write stories and they develop from there. XD

What characters did you create using the flaws-first method?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Princess-Toast In reply to ToddNTheShiningSword [2012-11-17 22:00:06 +0000 UTC]
(Most characters I make are not human lol, hope you don't mind. XD)
For example, [link] is rather the helpless type, and timid. [link] (Blue haired one) is short tempered, and very serious. [link] is rather arrogant and rude. Even my persona [link] I thought about my own flaws first. XD

ToddNTheShiningSword In reply to Princess-Toast [2012-11-20 15:53:35 +0000 UTC]
I don't mind them not being human. I think it's also really common for younger people (as in, not 40 year old + ) to make lots of characters that aren't human, because it's easier to understand everything when you control everything, and in nonhuman characters and fantasy worlds, we get to control everything. And besides, things like Patapons and stuff are cool.
I didn't expect your characters to be those things though, even though your avatar is a raging Patapon that can't quite hold in all her awesome.

for me, the storyline comes with my characters.
but, after realizing that that usually leads to Mary-Sues and Gary-stus, i've started putting more thought into it. and actually, this stamp is pretty much 50% the reason for my realizing it.

GreyWolfBeast In reply to ??? [2012-10-28 22:56:18 +0000 UTC]
My characters usually take a hour or something for a name and get the idea of it but... But I do not even have the personality of them yet as I create the story, I also saw someone say my story creates my character so he/she starts as a simple boring character but they develop. Then I revise the story and add the detail later well that is what I would do if I was writing stories still... I did awhile ago and it was pretty bad but now I am going to start back up I think.

silverybeast In reply to ??? [2012-09-20 11:26:12 +0000 UTC]
Ah, yes! Usually when I create a new OC, I first came up with a "sketch" of a character, and then I start developing that during I create their story. For me, I don't create OCs for my stories, the stories create my OCs. not always but at least 95% of the time anyway.

wow this make me feel stupid. right now I have 3 versions of my OC, but my story's of him just keep going off the cliff. 2 versions are marvel inspired, by hulk and Juggernaut. My original is suppose to be a solider who endured all kinds of hell in war, only to come back to his government to be used as a lab-rat.
