This is the painting process for the headshot of Cera from this batch
I do this for all of the mixed quality (now considered low quality) headshots!

To define the shapes I just use my hard round brush or fancypants with flow set to around 70% and I paint over the soft areas. I make the shapes look like fur/etc by kind of outlining them with a darker color, then i go over that new shape with more of the lighter color, until it looks 3d-ish
