Description Reference for anyone making a realistic wolf OC/RP char/etc.
Again, I used actual photos for ref. Also;

Blue eyes are more commonly seen on wolf pups; this color starts out as a light blue or almost silver shade and when a pup grows older, the color darkens to, usually, a grayish tone (sometimes, it stays blue throughout adulthood but this is a rare).

actually, wolves never keep their blue eyes throughout adulthood. There are some wolves with grey eyes, but only wolfdogs and dogs have actual blue eyes. Otherwise, this is a good guide!

Blue eyes aren't impossible, they're just rare

Unfortunately IΒ don't have the patience toΒ sift through which photos are real and which ones are doctored, but believe me when I say that I wouldn't have put blue on there unless I had actually seen a blue-eyed specimen. It's also worth noting that eye injury may also cause the eyes to appear blue, but more often than not, pups born with blue eyes usually dim down to a silver/gray. It's EXTREMELY rare for them to have naturally blue eyes throughout adulthood.

Do you know which colors are the most common to the most rare?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Child-Of-Hades In reply to aniimehunter [2016-05-19 20:28:05 +0000 UTC]

brown, olive, yellow, orange, jade, gray, blue

Wreckham In reply to aniimehunter [2016-04-11 07:26:06 +0000 UTC]

I would say orange, yellow, and brown are equally common; olive's probably somewhere in the middle; jade and grey are fairly uncommon; and blue is for puppies exclusively as any other blue seen in adults is either actually grey - a very pale shade of green - or caused by cataracts and the like.

Thanks! I also believe that wolves that have actual blue eyes are not 100% wolf and have a dog in there somewhere.

I know this is an old comment, but even black wolves aren't 100% wolf. Research shows that they interbred with dogs and got the gene.

Wreckham In reply to aniimehunter [2016-04-11 19:50:35 +0000 UTC]

You're right, no wolf that has blue eyes is 100% wolf. It could be that they're actually a low to mid content wolfdog as wolves do not carry the blue eyed gene but dogs do.

are wolf eye colors similar to fox eye colors?

Child-Of-Hades In reply to Crazy-Viverrid [2013-07-10 22:43:47 +0000 UTC]

Vaguely, from what I've seen most foxes have black, brown, tan, yellow, or green eyes, there are also albino foxes with their pink/red eyes and I'm sure leucistic (white but not arctic) foxes have blue/gray eyes but I'd have to look for photoes

Usually only pups have blue eyes, it's fairly uncommon for adults to have blue eyes, unless they're injured in some way or blind.
