Hello:

These are renders of a Lynx class variant, the Chimera subtype Command Ship. A ship I originally designed back in the day when I had plans for a BSG fanfic, but with now having an updated lore.

After the destruction of the satellite system IDRIS, the people of the Twelve Colonies lost vital infrastructure for the coordination of their fleets and for safe FTL jumps so, after the Battle at Marathon, the admiralty decided they needed a new option. A new satellite system was a no go as it would again be a target of Cylon hacking, so they decided the best option would be the use of ships that could coordinate the efforts of entire fleets, keeping a wider view of things and freeing the Battlestars for their duties commanding their own individual fleets. For this purpose they couldn't use their limited number of Celestra class ships nor retrofit civilian ships as they would indeed be a target for Cylon attacks. So the Chimera project started.

For the design the admiralty wanted, it was decided to use unfinished Lynx class destroyer hulls and modify them, greatly speeding-up the process, this way they can use strong ships that are less irrepleceable than Battlestars. For it's planned roles, the Chimera got many of it's heavy weapon turrets, with the respective ammo magazines, removed in favour of expanded command suits and room for the extra staff. Still, the ship can defend itself as it is armed with 12 double-barrel turrets, 160+ pdp guns and 3 silos for nuclear missiles, but the replacement of the weapon pods for carrier pods further diminished it's ship-based firepower in exchange of a modest fighter protection.
