Description
Okay...so this is my first tutorial ever. I've never made one before because, well, I really didn't think I had that much to say that other people hadn't already said better. But this tutorial came about because I really haven't seen many customizing tutorials out there, and when I needed one I couldn't find one and kind of had to figure things out myself. So here is my attempt to be helpful.
I am in no way any kind of expert. This is just the method I used to make my latest custom.

Thank you for this tutorial! I really would like to make action figures of the Seven Dwarfs from Snow White, and this looks like this would be the way to go.
Also, your character looks great!

I hope so.
One quick question: Can making customs get pricey? I just don't want to spend more than necessary.

That depends. You need the action figures for your base so you might have to buy those.
The clay's that I use are these:
www.amazon.com/Aves-Apoxie-Scu…
www.amazon.com/Polyform-Super-…
But you don't have to use both. As I said above the Apoxie sculpt sticks to the plastic better but you get less of it, so it is better for details and the Sculpey Firm is good for blocking out large areas. But you can use either, or both.
And for painting you don't really need anything special. Just acrylic paint.

Oh I know that, I just meant I don't want to spend a crazy amount of money buying expensive figures.
I'll certainly look into the Apoxie sculpt, and I think regular sculpey should work. Thank you for the advice. :3

Buying them new will certainly be tough on your wallet. But you can buy tons of used action figures on Ebay for pretty cheap and you can find them in yardsales for nearly nothing. You just have to look.
Regular Sculpey should be fine.

Wow! Really? I would like to do them for people some day. But they take a LOT of time to do and I have a lot on my plate right now.
All you can do is give it a shot.

Hmm, very interesting, but it does seem a bit difficult. I've never done sculpting, much less with a scalpel/carving knife, I could mess up big time. D:
But it's cool seeing how you do it, maybe one day I could do this. If not, I'll just ask someone to make it for me. XD
I can't get over how cool your characters are Especially Rover and the alien creature (forgot his name
) Might do fan art sometime, who knows

Well, it does require some sculpting. But all you need there is practice.
Commissioning someone is always a way to go. But it's a lot of fun doing it yourself.
Thanks! I'll pass that on to Rover. I'm sure he'll be flattered. Well, there are several aliens. Perhaps you mean Flyspur, Rover's blue first mate? Or Trigger, his little green fuzzy sidekick?

Fantasy-Fashionista In reply to chill13 [2014-08-27 17:01:34 +0000 UTC]
Yep. Practice, practice, and more practice. Lol.
And yeah, I agree. And you feel better because you did it yourself too.
And okay, thanks. And the blue alien that hangs with Rover, that one. ^.^ Flyspur, I like him too.

omgee...i'm sure the things needed are expensive and ALSO RARE here in the Philippines but if I have MOOOORRREEE time to do some artsy works, I may do it with my oc..
I love destroying old toys like meh old barbies.

Well, you can always buy online
Really, all you need is a polymer clay (which is pretty cheap but varies by type) and some paint.
Apoxie Sculpt is nice to have since it's harder but you really could do everything with the polymer clay, which, at least in the US, you can find at any craft store.
Heh, heh, fun. Especially when you can make something even cooler out of them. Have you ever tried repainting them?

This doesn't even look that difficult. It's a brilliant idea. Thank you so much for the tutorial!
Once I've got my OC's figured out, I might go buy some action figures somewhere in a thrift store and look what I can do

No. It's really not that hard. Quite a bit of work. But not really difficult.
Yeah, you can find old action figures just about anywhere for cheap. I'd love to see what you do!!!

That's just great! Thank you for this excellent tutorial.
There is an adendum I might suggest. If you just want to wash off the existing face of your action figure and repaint it, there;s an easy trick which I've used on My Little Ponies. Get a bottle of Goof-Off. It's a paint remover, but its for detail work. Use a Q-Tip, dip it in the Goof-Off and wipe off the excess. Gently paint Goof-Off over the prepainted eyes or other features. Blot-wipe with a Kleenex; repeat if necessary. Allow to dry before painting on new ones.
