Description
Rover took his hat off and wiped the sweat off his brow with the back of his arm. He leaned forward and tapped his forehead on the long handle of the growth simulator with an agonized groan.Bored. Bored! BORED!
He shifted, crossing his arms, propping them on the long thin device and resting his chin on them as he stared longingly at the sky. A sigh escaped him. Colors shifted and swirled among the clouds in Jssfloon's famous sky. But that wasn't what he saw. Beyond the clouds, beyond the colors, beyond even the sky was...space. A vast, sparkling universe full of adventure and excitement.
He imagined being out there. He would have a ship--a big beautiful ship that could skip from star to star like a stone across a pond. Everyone would call him 'Captain'. He smiled. "Captain Rover Finnigan." He liked the sound of that. But he wouldn't be alone. Blue would come. He had promised to come. And Soorn. He was attached to this silly old farm but once he saw Rover's amazing ship and truely understood all that the big wide outside had to offer he would come in a second.
They would be out there, flying, free among the stars and nebulas. Who knew what they would find out there? New people, new places, new food! Maybe...just maybe...there was something else he could find.
beep beep.
He was torn away from his daydream by the stimulator's scolding alert that if it wasn't being used it needed to be turned off. His gaze shifted to the rolling fields of dunefruit, each little plant needing an encouraging zap from the device in his hand.
He wanted to leave, to go find Flyspur and catch a Droofin or watch the skimmers come in...or just sit at the beach with his feet in the water.
But...He let out a tired sigh.
But help had been scarce this year. Soorn didn't have as many people working the fields. He needed Rover's help.
Rover gave a determined snort and puffed out his chest. He spoke in as deep and gruff a voice as he could manage, mimicking what he hoped sounded like a big, mean Trail Boss. "You ain't gonna sluff off on the job are you, cowboy? You got work to do, fellah! Get off your sorry kiester and drive them doggies!" He snapped to attention. "Yes SIR! No more daydreaming!"
"Well, I wouldn't be that strict."
Rover whirled around to find Soorn standing behind him, his lower arms crossed and a smile of amusement on his blue face.
Rover grinned sheepishly. "I was just...trying to get in the mood."
Soorn looked out over the field, noting the plants that Rover's stimulater had coaxed open. "You have made a lot of progress. I think it's time to take a break."
Rover frowned a little, kind of ashamed of himself for wanting to abandon his work when it really needed to be done. "I'm alright. I can finish it."
"You can come back to it later. Come on."
Rover shrugged, secretly grateful. He powered down the stimulator and shoved it in the ground so he could remember where he left off and followed Soorn. The Jssfloon reached into the bag that hung over his shoulder and pulled out two water bottles and handed one to Rover, who downed it in seconds.
"I appriciate all the work you have been doing the last month." Soorn said as he took a sip of his own bottle.
Rover shrugged. "Aw. It wasn't nothin'. Just tryin' to help is all."
"Yes. But I know how much you dislike working in the fields."
Rover's ears reddened. Sometimes he wished he wasn't so vocal about how much he hated farming. But it was impossible to keep his big mouth in check when he just plain didn't want to do something. That morning he had protested to high heaven before he had grudgingly stomped into the field to work.
"Well, it ain't THAT bad." He lied.
"You know, it has been five years since your little ship landed in my field." He looked off to their left where part of a small spacecraft jutted out of the field of fruit.
Rover didn't remember anything about the crash. But he remembered Soorn being there when he woke up, dazed, confused and in pain--with no other memories than that very moment.
They left the field, and on the other side of a line of trees was a small ledge overlooking the sparkling ocean, the branches of a massive candy-stripped tree giving them shade.
"The farm was lonely before you, Rover."
Rover shrugged awkwardly, giving his guardian a crooked grin. "Well, I am the best kind of company."
"You are not Jssfloon."
"Heh. No kidding."
Soorn continued as if Rover hadn't interrupted. "So I 'haven't the foggiest' when a human reaches their first metamorphosis."
Rover chuckled at Soorn's use of the human cliche. The first metamorphosis was a big step in the life of a Jssfloon. After weeks in an underwater cocoon they would grow a larger facial ridge and sprout the beginnings of their lower arms. It was the sign of adolescence. From what Rover had seen from the tiny info drive that showed him human life stories it didn't seem that humans went through metamorphosis. It was generally a time of celebration that the young one had reached a new life stage, one with more wisdom and new responsibilities. Silly, thing, really.
Soorn continued. "But, after what I have seen from you of late, I am certain that you have long passed the human equivalent."
Rover blinked. The thought hadn't really crossed his mind. Age had never been of interest to him. He never felt like he changed much. Gotten bigger, sure. But he never FELT any different.
"So I want you to have this." Soorn slipped a small box out his bag with both lower hands and passed it to Rover.
Rover took it reverantly. His mechanical left hand holding it and his right tracing the oval of the box top. "But I..." Rover was rarely a loss for words. But he was now.
"Just open it."
Rover slipped the lid of an gasped. A piece of shiny metal sparkled in the sunlight, his name in Jssfloon engraved in deep grooves across it's surface. He slipped it from the box and held it up. "IT'S A BELT BUCKLE!"
Soorn just smiled.
"An actual, real live, cowboy belt buckle!"
"It seemed like something you needed."
Rover threw his arms around Soorn, engulfing the smaller alien. "Thanks! I couldn'ta asked for anything better!"

Oh, goodness! Yes! He has quite a deep voice as an adult and to hear it changing would have been pretty funny. And I bet it confused the daylights out of him.

A heartwarming "coming of age" story. I wonder if Jsslfloon get something to commemorate their first metamorphosis? I think Soorin chose an excellent item, and one that I'm sure Rover will treasure his whole life. Sorry--I have to point out that "Board" should really be spelled "Bored" in this context--unless Rover is slamming his head against a piece of wood in frustration.

Thank you! They do. Usually from their parents. Something special to mark their change from child to adolecent. It's actually a sign of respect from the parent that their kid is growing up and has reached an age of responsibility.
Oh, he certainly will. You may notice that Rover is ALWAYS wearing that big shiny belt buckle.
Aw Man! I thought I fixed that. Thanks for telling me.

Awww! That ending really made me smile, Rover whooping "IT'S A BELT BUCKLE!!" and Soorn's calm reply, yet showing how much he'd been paying attention to Rover's cowboy movies with it. This was so sweet. (Though my heart admittedly caught there at the beginning, when Rover was imagining Soorn coming with them, "he'd come in a second," which of course doesn't happen in the end... excuse me while I go cry in a corner for a little bit.... )
That's also neat to think about, how a Jssfloon would be assuming humans went through metamorphosis too... did Rover ever get picked on because of his lack of secondary arms, once he got to be an adolescent?

Soorn is a very observant guy, especially when it comes to Rover. And while i'm sure he was very confused by them at first he grew to enjoy watching movies with Rover.
*sniff...sniff* Yeah....Rover just always assumed Soorn would be with him.
The Jssfloon are very knowlegable and tolerant of other species so it wasn't truely surprising to the other students that he was only two-armed, or one-armed depending on how you look at it. Usually they would never have dreamed of picking on a offworlder, as tourism from outsiders is the biggest income for the econamy. But Rover is a bit different. He lives on Jssfloon and is a classmate so, yes. He did get a bit of guff from other students about never growing a second pair of arms when every one else was. Being 'two-armed' is actually a saying that means being childish or at times even ignorant. And it's a expression that was certainly used more than once in Rover's case.

Oh cool! "Two-armed," I can indeed see how that could become an expression for them! I just love tiny quirks of made-up cultures like that, especially when they make so much sense. That one seems absolutely seamless. Have you ever tried to write actual words from the Jssfloon language? I know an actual dictionary would be a huge project, but I'm curious now what it might sound like untranslated, just with a few example words.
And yes, I can see how that phrase definitely would apply to Rover! As I think you said earlier, him and his predisposition to deliberately push any button labeled "do not push."

Aw thanks. Once I have the basics of a culture down, what they care about and how they live, it's pretty day to come up with things like that.
I would like to at least get the sound of the Jssfloon language down at some point.
Yep! Flyspur's mother uses the phrase in reference to Rover quite frequently.

"Pretty day?" I don't think I've heard that phrase before. But I bet you're right. I honestly need to get back to trying to make up some original worlds of my own. I often like thinking about them--I guess I'm just more hesitant to embark on a big project because I'm a little nervous about posting stuff of that sort on the internet, for some reason. I doubt I'd ever sell it, but still.
Haha, I bet she does! What's Flyspur's mother like, by the way? Has she been in any stories of his?

Yeah. I understand that. Hi Ho Hyperdrive just started out as a few character designs and has ended up as something I really do intend to sell some day. It makes me a little nervous having it up here too. A little late now, though.
She is in this one. But only briefly.

I clearly have spent a bit too much time on the bookface because I wated to "Like" this. XD
Soorn is such a great character and person. He is like the the wise mentor.
Now I wonder what they take on Rover growing facial hair would be like? I know that in some of the older movies, they show the men shaving, so I'd imagine that Rover would imitate them. Funny thought/question, what would the Jssfloon reaction be to any beard/mustache that Rover would grow?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
chill13 In reply to KatysCornerTx [2015-12-07 14:11:06 +0000 UTC]
You got it exactly. Most of the heroes in the old western are clean shaven and are shown shaving. So facial hair wasn't too much of a surprise to him. But yeah. Having is something he got pretty excited about. Jssfloon is a tourist planet so they have seen fuzzy creatures from all over. But surprise and amusement would probably be the standing reaction of him growing hair where it never had been before. I actually wanted to do a little sketch page of him experimenting with it. Because you know when there is something new he has to play with it. Moustache, Jssfloon facial hair, full beard. He, of course, settled on jut sideburns.

KatysCornerTx In reply to chill13 [2015-12-07 23:41:33 +0000 UTC]
I suspect he would have a very curly beard and mustache. Though, I could see him trying for a full handlebar mustache when is older. Hmmm, would it be the same color as his hair? I'd think most likely but one of my cousins has brown hair and a red beard (my aunt was a red head and his sister is a red head). And I had a classmate with auburn hair and black eyebrows (completely natural). You've got some shading at the temples that leads me to think his beard and mustache would be darker. *is a total dork when it comes to these things*

He probably doesn't have many and he works in his fields himself as well. And I imagine there is times when he doesn't have help at all. But yes, he is a VERY rare Third. Flyspur looks up to him a great deal.
Yep!! It is indeed. Since Jssfloon don't wear belts I imagine he had to have it very specially made.

Well it goes well with his other special-made clothing Rover has.

Heh. Yeah. Basically everything he wears has to be custom made. He's not exactly shaped like a Jssfloon.
Aw. Thanks. Well, it's a pencil sketch digitally colored. I only do that occasionally.

Haha, that's true. Even if he did, his cowboy cloths wouldn't be the norm anyway. Speaking of which, amazing to see how much taller he already is then Soorn at that age.
Ah ok. Seems like the shading or coloring is a little different too. But maybe not.

Rebel-Rider In reply to chill13 [2015-12-07 04:07:13 +0000 UTC]
Probably because human type clothing would be a nightmare in the water. It would get tangled with the extra arms and cause all kinds of trouble.

No kidding. I've got Chix, like Doc, and they wear a similar thing. They're arboreal and normal clothes would get tangled in branches, plus, they have wing membrane so human clothes just won't fit. (Belts would require piercings. At one time, I'd thought about doing that, but I realized that they're pretty independent of human customs so they likely wouldn't behave how a human would if a human suddenly had membranes between their arms and legs.)

Ooh. Ouch. Yeah. Totally not worth it for a belt. Belts are good for three things. Looking awesome, holding your pants up and carrying things. You can do all those things without cutting holes in yourself. Yeah, I noticed they have special clothing and in shape it looks similar to the Jssfloon.

Thank you. I know. Rover can make friends with just about anybody, and he cares a great deal about his crew. But the two people Rover has been the closest to are Flyspur and Soorn. They are the only people he can talk about his real fears with without feeling that he has to impress them. Loosing Soorn was probably the hardest thing he has went through so far. You might notice that Rover is always wearing that belt buckle.
