Description
Patience, a young milkmaid of eighteen, has never been in love...well, except once when she was four. But that doesn't count...or does it?"What is this love that upsets everybody? And how is it to be distinguished from insanity?"
Of course her loveless state doesn't last for long. Her little playfellow from childhood shows up and for the second time she falls head over heels for him: [link]
Gilbert and Sullivan's opera 'Patience' is such a delightful story with hilarious dialogue, intriguing characters (some lovable and some not so much) and wonderful, peppy music. It pokes fun at the Aesthetic movement of the late 1800's, the Brittish army and love in general.

Patience is such a doll, and you've got her just the way she should be.

Patience is one of the few female characters of Gilbert's that I actually like. I mean most of his heroine's are either snooty (Yum-Yum is hilarious and a great character but it's hard to actually like her.) or bland (like Josephine). But Patience is such a sweet girl, she's just as much a dumb blonde as Yum but with her it's endearing. She reminds me a little of Mary Ann from Perfect Strangers.

Patience is cute. She is so sweet and innocent that it is hard not to like her, even if she sometimes seems a little bit dumb. A lot of Gilbert's women aren't terribly likable. I think I like Pitti-Sing best of all, but of the "older" women, my favorites are Jane, Sophie, Katisha, and Dame Hannah. As silly as Jane is, I feel sorry for her. She finally gives Bunthorne as good as he gives her. But Pitti-Sing remains my favorite. There was a real-life Geisha in Japan a few years ago who reminds me of Pitti-Sing. She called herself the "Punk Geisha". There are several websites called that, so I doubt if any of them are her. She liked to wear silly stuff like "groucho-masks" and use funny props. There was a TV documentary featuring her. I think her name was Hana-Chan.

Oh look at her dainty little outfit- charming, yet much more believable than the china-figurine looks worn in early productions. Although of course I know she's meant to look like one of said figurines- but still, I like this outfit better than any I've yet seen on the internet.

Cute! I love how her bustle looks
that, and I love how her gesture conveys her personality, which is only pushed forward with the cheerful expression she has on

Aw. Thank you. Yeah, Patience is very cheerful and more outspoken than most girls of the time.
Can you imagine actually having to WEAR a bustle??

As said already - super cute!
Why don't they ever put up productions of these Gilbert and Sullivan shows in Finland? Your art always makes me very curious about them, I'd love to see one live!

It is great to see them live if you can. But I think it's just as much fun to read them and listen to the music. Sometimes the performances, characters and backgrounds you can come up with in your head are better than anything a theater group can come up with. You can read every one of their plays here: [link]

Super cute design! It's rare to find an artist who can capture the Disney aesthetic in a design without simply rehashing their own favorite characters.
