Description Another Gilbert and Sullivan Disney Princess.

"Oh, pity pity me. Our Captain's daughter she and I that lowly sailor." Lamented poor Ralph Rackstraw who was nothing more than a midshipman.

As Captain Corcoran's daughter Josephine is a proud girl and is quite ashamed of herself when she falls madly in love with a lowly sailor on her father's ship. She swears that she'll never lot him know how she feels and even shuns him viciously when he tries to propose.

To Him: Refrain audacious tar your suit from pressing! Remember who you are and who you're addressing!

To herself: I'd love my rank to scorn in union holy. Were he more highly born or I more lowly!

Josephine is, of course, from Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera 'HMS Pinafore'. Great name for a ship ain't it?

She's beautiful! Well done indeed!

Tiny bit of nit-picking: I always thought that line went "I'd laugh my rank to scorn"

Just looked it up and you were right. Sure sounds like she says 'love' in the recording I have.

I'm soo happy to know someone who knows enough about G&S to correct me! I'll have that changed.

Happy to help!

If you're interested, I'd be more than happy to send you snippets of Opera Australia's Pinafore (or any of their G&S produtions)

Thank you very much! But we actually have the Australian Pinafore at the library.

That's cool Is it just Pinafore or the Pinafore/Trial double bill? (the latter is more recent)

The one with both. (thought the Judge was creepy) There's another???

I don't think there's another OA production (none that I'm aware of, anyway) And the judge being creepy is basically just Anthony Warlow doing what he does best - pulling focus XD

I'm curious, are you a fan of opera in general, or just G&S?
I'd also love to see you illustrate Never mind the why and wherefore!

Never Mind the Why and Wherefore is probably my favorite! LOVE that song.

I know very little about true opera 'cept that Carmen dies. (although I did buy a gigantic opera CD set the other day) I'm pretty much in for the laughs and from what I've heard there isn't much of that in the serious operas. But I'm not closed minded.

It's one of my favourites too!

There's actually a good number of comedic operas out there, should you be interested. I can highly recommend Strauss' operetta Die Fledermaus -- it's every bit as blissfully silly as a G&S work. Or, if you want to jump straight into "proper" opera, The Barber of Seville and The Marriage of Figaro are good starting points. (Figaro is the sequel to Barber, but is perfectly watchable as a standalone story)
