Description
Here he is so far with all the tools and materials I use. For action figures like this I use Apoxie Sculpt. It sticks easily to plastic, which polymer and paperclay's don't, and it air dries, which means I don't have to bake him and risk melting his plastic. AAAND this stuff dries even harder than the plastic so you don't have to worry about it breaking even with tiny details. All the grey places are my clay additions.
My tools are pretty simple. An exacto knife, various ball end tools, sandpaper, and the colorful ones are just two sizes of needles I shoved in some clay.
Only two more steps! Gotta paint him and put on his coat.

I forgot you were using apoxie. That Rover here turned out so cool. Looks like he came from a store.

Sweet! Rover's lookin' good! Such detail already! Who knew Kirk's facial structure was so perfect for Rover?
Any suggestions as to where I could find sculpting materials like the ones you use? I've been gathering components for sculpting one of my characters. So far I have most of the paint colors I'd need and several doll clothing items or pieces of fabric for extra detail, but I'm lacking the most important part; the actual sculpting materials...

For this I used Apoxie Sculpt which I get online. You can google it. I also use Super Sculpey for doll faces and hands and Sculpey Firm for some things. Premo Sculpey comes in all different colors and that is what I have used for Lookin and my other Jssfloon kids.
Sculpey you can get in most any craft store.

Cool! Might just get some of that...
Awesome! I'll look for it on my next trip to Hobby Lobby.

Apoxie sculpt is some great stuff. I use it on my pony mods. Is this a Star Trek figure? Because that is what the body type looks like (I may have a collection so I have a passing familiarity with them).

Ain't it, though?! I just love it! PERFECT for action figure modifications.
He was Kirk from Generations. I may possibly have a massive action figure collection as well, made up of principally Star Trek and Jurassic Park.......(I literally have a toy box...)
My Next ProjectI bet y'all can guess what's going to happen here!
My previous Rover and Flyspur are around seven inches tall and I love them to pieces. These figures are around 4 inches. Which is good for two reasons. 1. They can fit well on the dashboard of my car. and 2. most of my other action figures (Star Trek, Jurassic Park ect.) are around this size. So fun to play with
Action figures, pretty much no matter what they are, are always something i'm on the lookout for at garage sales and such. Because I can turn them into something else. Half my toybox (yes I have one) is stuff I intend to modify.
I feel like Sid from Toy Story...just not with the psychoness and evil laughter.

Impressive! Very exciting! With the grey hair I wondered if it was either Rover's father or Rover greatly aged.

Ha ha! Nope! Just haven't painted it yet.
I should draw an older rover, though. Just for the fun of it.

Awesome! The face is almost perfect. Looks like this Rover figurine will look a little more serious in the face than his usual happy expression.
I'll keep that Apoxie Sculpt in mind if I ever wanna try something like this someday. Probably will be an epic fail, but, lol. Won't know 'til I actually try.

I was surprises how close the features were. Apparently Rover resembles Kirk. Who knew. Most action figures have a rather neutral expression. I imagine so you can imagine them with any emotion. Biut yeah, Rover does usually have that daredevil smile on his face.
Well you can never expect a first shot to be perfect. But you never know! You might be surprised at just how awesome it turns out! Who would you make?

Yeah.
And I know, but when it comes to anything with art, I can be somewhat of a perfectionist. x'D And true.
Maybe a favorite video game character or an OC of mine (Which I have yet to draw). I was looking up the Apoxie Sculpt and it comes in different colors. Does it matter what color you use?

I know. Me too.
Um. I use a grey one. But I don't think there were as many options as they have now when I bought mine. Maybe look at the reviews on the different kinds?

Oh he's really looking super awesome!!! Wow, you work quick! His coat and everything, and his boots! And even his hair and hat already! He's already looking practically finished! Are you going to mess with his face much? It already looks close to his as is.
It's great that that clay works so well for this too!
And I like your needles there with the colorful handle things. I did something like that to some needles a long time ago too.

I am when i'm in the mood.
No. Working that small is REALLY hard and the only thing I would change is his nose.
I'm so happy I discovered it.
they are perfect tools.

Haha, I know what you mean.
Ah, I can see that. Good that you found that good of a match for his face then!
For sure!

Wow- that face is almost spot-on as a base for Rover! What figure did you use?

Isn't it?? The nose could be a little bigger but that's about it. It's Captain Kirk from....one oof the movies. Not sure which. Maybe Generations.
