Description
Another of my sci-fi designs: this one's been bubbling away at the back of my brain for a while now. Basically: taking the general style of the Star-wing fighter (A personal favorite) and making an interceptor as opposed to a heavy fighter. Here's the result. Taking some inspiration from the Stargate F-302 and the Imperial Eagle from Elite: Dangerous. Not fully happy with all her lines and was debating what sort of tail to put on her; wound up picking the T-style stabilizer from a couple favorite aircraft designs as it matched the letter I picked... was debating more of a "spoiler"-style one but thought that looked a bit un-star wars-y. Might have to continue to do some tweaking.

Cygnus Spaceworks Tau-class XI-3 Star-Angel Interceptor:

With Cygnus Spaceworks well established as the Imperial navy’s preeminent producer of shuttlecraft and cargo transports, and with both the XG-1 Star-wing and XB-2 Missile Boat proving themselves as viable heavy fighters and torpedo bombers respectively; itw as only logical that Cygnus’ engineers turn their sights to the creation of a dedicated interceptor. This would however prove something of a challenge for Cygnus’ engineers: given that any submitted design in this area of specialization would face stiff competition from Seinar Fleet System’s TIE series, which while often wanting as heavy fighters or bombers, produced often superior interceptor craft. Indeed; during the development process of the XI-3, the TIE/IN had already utterly superceeded Kuat Systems Engineering’s Nimbus V-wings and the Incom Corporation I-7 Howlrunner in service to the Imperial Navy, and was on its way to replacing its own predecessor in the TIE/LN model.
Instead of attempting to match Seinar in the field of inexpensive, and overall expendable starfighters, Cygnus took the opposite approach; like its cousins the Star-wing and Missile-boat; the newly designated XI-3 Star-angel would take a quality over quantity approach. Even so; matching the raw engine performance and maneuverability of the TIE/IN proved too difficult; and while the Star-angel cannot match its Seinar competitor maneuver for maneuver, it can easily match those of the Alliance’s RZ-1 A-wing; and do so while carrying superior shielding and firepower.
The Star-angel’s primary ship-to-ship armament comes in the form of four light laser-cannons, similar to those carried by the TIE Interceptor, and configured for maximum fire-rate, positioned in pairs beneath the fighter’s distinctive forward-swept wings. Additionally; the fighter carries up to 8 missiles in single-fire launch tubes. While these launchers cannot accommodate the heavy torpedoes, bombs or mines of the Missile-boat or Star-wing’s munitions bays; they can carry aspect-seeking concussion missiles or cluster warheads, ideal for the fighter’s intended prey of Rebel Alliance starfighters.
