Description
PROMPT
Traveling around the vastness of the wilds of Hireath isn’t an easy life, that’s for sure. After another long day of traveling on rarely walked roads and across untouched wilderness of Onea, you stop to rest at a friendly bonfire. A few peddlers are trying to sell their wares, while their mercenary guard dozes off lazily waiting for their meal. It’s peaceful and homely in a way that a life in the city isn’t, not for you anyway.
A bard is about to fly into a fanciful song about heroes and gods of old when the bonfire you’ve all gathered around roars and twists. Embers fly high into the moonless sky, and they fall upon the campsite. It’s as unnatural as it is frightening, and as the pyre grows and expands, covering the ground around it, everyone turns to flee.
Later, Florian and Shiann would agree that they probably should have expected it, expected the startling turn in events. It was after all not the first time that they had been betrayed by a peaceful gathering around a fire. Hardly half a year had passed since they had both of them witnessed the birth of a new god out of the flames of a cursed fire, a fire that stood even now as the pillar of bone it had transformed into.
So, yes, the two Vagabonds felt that the fire suddenly exploding and reaching greedy tendrils towards them was not, all things considered, that out of the ordinary.
That didn’t mean they were happy about it.
It was a beautiful autumn evening, or at least it was if you asked Shiann. She found the crisp air invigorating, refreshing to someone always on the move. Florian was considerably less impressed, having an innate animosity towards the cold. No matter how many times Shiann tried to distract the Kirin with observations of the beautiful flora or the azure sky, Florian remained petulant and over-dramatic. (In truth, Florian enjoyed the attention afforded to them by Shiann’s attempts at distraction, and Shiann enjoyed the ability to prove her own use-fullness to the Kirin, for all that she was a ‘common child of Argus’. It worked for them.)
Although the advent of night had lowered the temperature yet farther, the communal fire and promise of storytelling had been enough to capture Shiann’s attention and divert Florian’s complaining. They had just settled down, basking in the fire’s warmth and eager for the bard’s tale, when everything went wrong. Florian, sensitive as they were to fire, had just begun to turn their head, eyes curiously glancing at the crackling fire behind the bard- and then the fire erupted, and all chaos broke loose.
