I kinda want to start an avatar site * U* I made a base and played around with hair. Let's see if this goes somewhere!Related content

I would join this, and I think it would be very popular.
It's not an easy feat though.
I've run an avatar site in the past.
A lot of people are still trying to build avatar sites, and they're trying to use phpbb2 and all the old mods.
I understand why, because the mods for phpbb2 were simply amazing at the time, and there are mods as great for other forum software.
However, don't use them. They're extremely old, outdated, and nulavatar is buggy. There are no security updates for phpbb2, so you could be hacked and taken down fairly easily.
Not mention that the coding, php, is forever changing.
There are two options you could go for. Hiring someone (try freelancer) to do the coding for you(Or if you have a friend).
The other option is to try out the vbulletin mods. There's a mod group called Dragon Tech I think. They have lots of addons for vbulletin 4. Even though it'll cost you maybe $500 to set it all up. It's the cheaper option compared to getting someone to code it from scratch. (But the second option means you can have features that you want. However, the avatar system shop is a little weird. You can't merge their store mod and avatar mod, it's sad really. So items that have multi-poses like most avatar sites have)

I've always been curious as to how other avatar sites were able to set themselves up while I am staring at the massive pile of work left before me ... becauseΒ I think I'm going to do the coding myself HEH OTL because I know a bit of node.js and it would give me the most flexibility for the future, but I'm starting to realize how difficult poses and layering and everything is going to be, not to mention features I want to add.Β

I don't tell people the site I was running because I was young and inexperienced.
So I ended up with a bad rep.
The most challenging part is doing it on your own, and keeping motivation.
The biggest mistake people make when opening sites like these. Avatar sites, pet sites, etc.
Is that they open before they're ready. You have to have all your basic features. Some things to do.
But the main thing is content.
Plan ahead. Before you open, you want to have AT LEAST 6 months worth of content to release.
I think a year is best.
Because if you have a year's worth of updates for clothes, hair, and all the events planned. It will make your life easier.
it will also be better when you have sick days, and you don't have to rush work.
I would suggest googling Crysandrea, and downloading their source code. They've released it for free for people to download and use.
it has no admin panel (Which is a stupid idea) But it should give you ideas, theories, and concepts to work from.
The other biggest problem I see is that communities become small and closed off. They don't grow.
The members who've joined from the start will complain and chuck hissy fits if you mention advertising.
But if you don't advertise, you won't make money, and you won't grow.
You need to grow to make money, and you need money to grow.
The last thing you want is a dead site on your hands. That's what lots of communities are like now.
I'm finding it hard alone to break into the deviantart community still.
I'm not saying become money hungry like Gaia. You can run a big site without being a money grab.
But new users won't stay if the community is dead most of the time, and when users are signed on, they are closed off in their little groups of friends.
When you launch, I would highly consider paying for advertising on deviantart. I think it would bring a lot of users who would love it, and stick to it.
