Description
Read cure's tutorial:www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forumβ¦
This is part 1 of 2 (probably)! Here I elaborate on some basic principles of pixel art (and art in general) like color.
I wanted to talk about bases and hair, buuut this is long enough as is LOL
So yeah, watch out for part 2, coming your way! Hope this stuff helps, and feel free to ask questions!

To be honest, I'm not interested in pixel art at all. But I read this guide, and I have to say... your explanation of the shadow hues is the best explanation for shadow colors I've ever read. The visual for it makes so much sense (the closeness of the shadow hues -- I haven't thought of warm-light/cool-shadows in that way!). Thank you for sharing such knowledge with us!Β

This is just so lovely and helpful!
I'm still iffy on the hue shifting and harmonizing the color part, cause I'm challenged.
How did you know to use orange to contrast the green?
Basically how do you know to hue shift red -> purple, but not green -> purple?
π: 0 β©: 1
Chisari In reply to papercharm [2014-07-02 02:47:59 +0000 UTC]
oh yeah no, I forgot to mention a detail! Hue shifting works best when the colors are relatively similar in hue. Like, if you have orange and blue which are complementary colors, they will not hue shift well.
I tried formulating a more mathematical theory from looking at the color wheel but my hypotheses are all wrong. I'm sorry, I'll have to think it over a bit more!Β
and I shouldn't have said purple - the shadow is more like a maroon, which is closer to red than green is to purple. if you had like a mint green though, which has a bit of a blue tint to it, that actually would look good shifted to purple!
but yeah thanks for that question! I'll add this to the guide tomorrow :,D

Ah, thank you for the clarifications. You don't need to be sorry, you did a fantastic job with the tutorial.
I was just never really well with hue shifting, always did the straight ramp thing.
I had seen cure's tutorial before and hue shifting was always where I got lost. I'm not familiar with color
theory so I don't know how to read the color wheel, lol.Β But I'm slowly getting a bit of it thanks to you.Β I
really appreciate it and I can't wait to see more of your tutorials <3.
Thank you for taking the time to answer my question c: ~

With so many tutorials on deviantart it's hard to find one that teaches you something you haven't already read 100 times over. This, however, felt like I was learning pixel art all over again! Well written (even being so wordy I didn't feel like it was dragging for even a second) useful tips explained to make sense, and new ideas that hadn't yet been brought to my attention. Well done!

wow I'm really happy to hear that! I meant for this guide to be a supplement to the other popular ones so I could build off their ideas instead of repeating them, so it's awesome that it worked out like so. thanks for the feedback!! ; u;
